Was browsing on Amazon's Woot clearance site and lo behold, came across a brand new stock allotment of the Xbox Series S/X dedicated and officially licensed 3rd-party arcade stick, the "Nacon Daija Arcade Fight Stick," at 44% off of it's MSRP of $249.99 usd for only a mere $139.99 usd right now saving a whopping $110.00 right off the bat (as you know that most 3rd-party produced arcade sticks for the Series S/X consoles use generic arcade parts like with the 8Bitdo based ones indeed -- you certainly do get what you pay for in the end): https://electronics.woot.com/offers/nac ... elec_14_10 You can use this particular arcade stick with the Xbox One console as well.
and here it is as listed on Amazon with it's regular asking MSRP: https://www.amazon.com/Arcade-Officiall ... e0848&th=1
This particular arcade stick has all brand new Japanese Sanwa-Denshi parts factory installed from the get-go (with a square gate already installed which is necessary for the Series S/X based stg titles) and works flawlessly on the Series S and Series X consoles. You can swap out the ball top for a short "bat top" styled joystick if it needed be. These are brand new, factory boxed and ready to be shipped out to your final destination. I personally haven't seen it sold this low ever since it first appeared at retail back in 2023, especially brand new. You can even install customized artwork if so inclined to make it more personalized to your tastes if so desired (which is a big plus "in my book") by using STG or FTG themed artwork.
Some shmuppers prefer the Seimitsu based arcade parts instead and it's doable to swap out the Sanwa-Denshi parts for those if so inclined -- it's just a matter of personal preference as to using either Sanwa (as is stock) or upgraded with all Seimitsu parts for your serious shmupping needs/excursions.
Standard shipping through Woot is a mere $6.00 usd more which is really mere "chmup change" nowadays.
The Arcade Shock site had a recent special promotional deal on the PS5/PS4 hybrid based based Nacon Daija Arcade Fight Stick for $199.99 usd instead of it's usual MSRP of $249.99 usd pricetag but is currently all sold out: https://arcadeshock.com/collections/fro ... ps5-ps4-pc

What makes you say that a square gate is required for shooters on the Series X?
Re: Cool cheap-ass Xbox Series S/X arcade stick on Woot.....
I would argue that a square gate is needed for practically all games.
exceptions:
2 direction gate for Space invaders, Mappy
diamond gate for Pac-Man
And maybe a round gate for some fighting games/ characters (Mortal Kombat, Zangief grapplers)
Everything else, please stick to square.
Of course try to experiment. But if you lose or do not get used to it, please understand that the square gate is your way back to the top!
Square just works best based on the way a joystick is designed with 4 microswitches.
If there was a design with 8 microswitches, at that point perhaps an octogate would be optimal

I like to use an octo gate for the right stick of my twin stick (junker Saturn twin stick with internals replaced with Seimitsu sticks)

I'm a big fan of octagonal gates with shooters, golden age arcade games, etc.
