GP2X: Worth it?

Post by BIG »

I've been thinking about importing one for awhile, but I'm still a bit skeptical about it since I have yet to see one in action.

For those of you who have bought the GP2x,how is it? Would you say that it is better than the PSP as far as emus+media goes?

How's the LCD,d-pad,buttons? What are the pros and cons (specifics)?

HELL YEAH!

But you have to be patient with it and wait for firmware updates and stuff. The video player is still very crash-prone, and not all emulators and games are working with the TV-out.

But I think MAME and MVS emulators are already enough to warrant a purchase. The MVS emulator runs surprisingly well.

The stick is pretty dodgy though, you can make a custom cap for it which helps, but there's a natural diagonal bias in the stick which makes hitting ordinal directions difficult. Plus it's not microswitched so it doesn't feel anything like a NGPC stick. I think the buttons feel great though, and the unit itself is light and comfortable to hold. Get one before they become rare!

Whoa.

Did you just say MVS and MAME?

Are they both running perfectly w/sound?

Tempting,indeed.

Actually, no. It's an older version of MAME that's been ported, so the list of playable shooters is pretty small, I only noticed a few noteworthy supported titles like Varth and Kyuukyoku Tiger.

MVS is almost there. Most games run pretty smoothly without sound, but if you want sound, it will slow down a bit even with an overclock. But it's still very actively in development and it's getting updates almost weekly, it looks like... Google for the gngeo2x wiki, there should be a pretty lengthy list of how each game works at certain settings.
