Shmup-style background videos/FMVs/etc

Post by cj iwakura »

Something that isn't necessarily from a shmup, but has a shmup vibe.

What made me think of this was the background video for Asterios - Reentry from EZ2AC:

Just has that vibe of a single fighter up against impossible odds.

Some other easy candidates would be the IIDX videos for Gradiusic Cyber and Burning Heat, but that feels like cheating since Konami made those.

OtaKing's TIE Fighter short film. Enemy Side Mode. Would do any STG attract mode proud. Tecno Soft-worthy BGM, too. Image

Also, a still image, but this is the Kyuukyoku Tiger/Raiden 1-styled "slow drop / big bang" bomb to a T. Literally, could go on a shirt. :o

Lem even pronounced it with a hard second "b," just like Batwider MC, et al.

I'm reminded of a specific rendition of Geese Howard's theme; for a time there was a compilation OST video on YouTube that, amongst the usual versions, strung together this really nice orchestral opening with a hardcore rock / electronic rendition (allegedly from Maximum Impact, but further research has yielded zip) that - separated from the man himself - could easily have scored the coolest of STG or mecha openers.

Unfortunately it's since slipped out of searchability, and trying to dig through tracks one-by-one while being harried by YT's terrible interface is enough to make you want to throw a sharply-dressed crime weeb out of a top-floor window...

Speaking of Burning Heat, there's a Mr. T with Motoaki. F (3 Option Mix) knocking about the Beatmania / DDR side of the internet. Please tell me we're talking about that Mr. T. I want to believe.

Phwoar, exemplary! Fuses golden age anime cool-rule with all the iconic Star Wars shots you could want, and all without a single line of dialogue 8)

Seems I need to give OtaKing a second look - their R-Type short had similar highs, but slathers itself in awkwardly VA'd isekai gack (and a few noticeable Oi this is actually 3D bits) that sell the animation talent and juggernaut subject matter short.

Little-known fact, those hakama pants double as air brakes. Had to wear out eventually

Aha, I'd wondered if that was theirs too! I've never actually seen it beyond thumbnails. I tried and slammed it shut again. Spidey sense. >_>
