I am looking at picking up NAOMI 1 hardware now that it has finally come down to a reasonable price. There are a few questions I would like cleared up though, if anybody here has any insight.
1. Are games/systems region locked? I am not sure, but I think they are.
2. Assuming they are region locked, can I just swap the BIOS chip to play games from different regions? Is there more to it than that?
3. What hardware is required. From what I have read, I gather that I need a motherboard, cart, and JAMMA interface board in order to run it in my JAMMA cabinet. Anything else I would need? I would be picking up the GD-ROM sometime in the future.
4. Anything else I should look out for?
Thanks for any info you can provide.

Seeking some NAOMI info
1.Some are.
2.Yes you can switch bios.
3.naomi, game and an I/O board are the bare essentials. There are three kinds of I/O boards though, the capcom one, and two sega ones. The capcom one and the second sega one have built in 3.3V psu and an audio amp. If you use the first sega I/O you need an external audio amp and a psu capable of delivering 3.3v, a hacked PC psu works. You'd probably want to have a pc psu in the future as the naomi+gdrom needs a bit more juice than an oridnary arcade psu can handle. Also, you need a dimm board as well as a GDrom for the GDrom games.
4. Hmmm not really, naomis are quite anoying when it comes to current, they want you to be as close to +5v as possible or you will suffer from some errors.
Also, when you buy get one with a later bios revison. The earliest ones doesn't support the GDrom

Okay, I've got a question that I really need answered since I'm a bit confused. I recently bought a Naomi GD rom setup with the first Sega I/O. I guess I made a bit of a boo-boo, as I now see that the capcom i/o is probably the way to go since I have a Jamma cab and dont' want to spend extra money/search time for an audio amp. I'm returning the i/o and trying to get a capcom one, but the company I'm talking to is swearing that the capcom i/o does NOT work with a GDROM setup -- Is this at all true? I realize that is needs a power supply, in fact I already have one, but it will run, yes?
Thanks in advance.
Update: I spoke with the company and they said that they haven't tested the capcom i/o with the GDROM unit AND a power supply, only the i/o and the gdrom alone. So my question remains, with a power supply, will the capcom i/o work with a gdrom setup?
Thanks in advance.

You should really be asking this on www.sega-naomi.com msg boards. In short whatever I/O you use, you will need a seperate power supply for the gdrom. Capcom I/O + cab power supply, will not have enough amps to also power the GDROM, and its common for people to burn out the capcom unit trying to do it this way.aesthetik wrote:Okay, I've got a question that I really need answered since I'm a bit confused. Confirmed- you need a pc style power supply to run the naomi + gd rom at the same time. After that, your capcom IO can run on whatever. I've got a PC power supply running the naomi and gd rom and then the capcom IO running off the jamma arcade power supply seperately.
Aparently, you've got to power the naomi and gd rom with a bigger power supply, but not THROUGH the capcom IO, as that's what wears it out I guess. I bet if I had all three of my pieces running off my PC power supply, but not in series (not into the capcom IO first), they would all work fine. I'll probably try that when I get time to solder it up.
