Anyone install tactile buttons on a Gameboy/GBA? D-Pad issues

Post by bobrocks95 »

I've installed two tactile button mods recently- one cheapo GBA kit from AliExpress (https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804680399355.html) and one GBC kit from Froggo Customs (https://froggocustoms.com/products/game ... button-mod)

I have no earthly idea why people aren't talking about this, but with both of these button mods you can now press all 4 d-pad directions at once by just mushing down in the center of the D-Pad. No SOCD cleaning is mentioned anywhere and there's no circuitry on the flex PCBs that could do it anyways. This can totally break some games, and at the very least makes diagonals way too easy to hit- tried Project S-11 and it's practically unplayable, not that there's a ton of GBC shmups but it speaks to the problems the new tactile D-Pad has.

The GBC kit also has a lot of "deadzone" or slop on any button press where you have a large travel distance with nothing happening before the plastic actually gets to the tactile switch to activate it. The GBA kit came with replacement membranes that tightened things up a lot, though they didn't fit great in my aftermarket shell.

Has anyone gotten one of these and had any luck with replacement buttons, replacement membranes, or any other custom work to clean them up? I am outright amazed this isn't mentioned in all of the reviews, I guess I should leave a negative one on the FroggoCustoms page to get the guy to actually respond to my emails (forgot I had left one on the GBA kit).
