alternative PSone PSUs?

Post by RuffNEC »

hi, are there any good Psone PSUs alternatives as they are now 24years old? Like something from Triad or so. But the Specs are kinda weird 7.5V at 2.0A ? and not sure what size the barrel connector has. Any differences across de the different regions NTSC-J, US and PAL?

There's also the "Old Skool" adapter that's available on Amazon and Stone Age Gamer. Can't vouch for its quality though. I would hope it's not total crap if Stone Age Gamer is selling it...

If you still have an original adapter though, I'd imagine it's built fairly well. Maybe just a recap would be fine to extend its life for another few decades.

It's one of the best PSUs and is also compatible with many other consoles:

Oh crap I thought PSOne had a voltage regulator like most other systems of the time with a DC input? I currently have a 12V supply hooked up to mine...

It has multiple voltage regulators, but I believe they all have max ratings of at least 25V, so they should be fine. They might get a bit hotter than normal though.

I saw a complete PSone console with official PSone lcd screen bundled set (with the PSone dual shock controller included as well) in used condition at my local Gamestop for a mere $85.00 usd back in 2002 (the original MSRP of the PSone with official lcd screen bundled set, in brand new condition, was $249.99 usd back in 2001). Bought it and it came with the proper USA region PSone A/C adapter -- still works like a charm in 2024 indeed.

Thanks! All the ICs check out, only potential issue could be the 8V portion of the circuit but that's probably fine too if the rest is.

I've also seen mentions of using USB to barrel jack adapters and using PD, if one wants to go that route.

Would this work for any external PSU for old consoles? I always thought PD only worked with newer devices, but if it can detect needed voltage and current it is a game changer.

I haven't been paying much attention to PD since I'm not really interested in using it (at least not right now), but It would obviously need a source that can be manually set to specific output voltages, since a barrel adapter wouldn't be able to tell the source what voltage it needs. But most retro consoles can accept a range of voltages thanks to their internal voltage regulators, so I'd imagine it would be fine as long as the source is providing quality power.
