Which shmup would you like to see more of but through another genre?
The thought hit me the other day when I was reading the backstory to some of the shmups I've been playing lately: once in a while they have a pretty interesting backdrop/world/story! What shmup would you want to explore through some other genre, such as an RPG or an adventure game for example?
The story of Espgaluda intrigues me a fair bit, the world of Mushihimesama would be wonderful to explore in closer detail and I'd love to spend some more time in the company of the Silverhead in Steel Empire/Empire of Steel and check out what other steampunk machines they have - perhaps as a mechanic?! Ooh, and a Hazelnut Hex platformer filled to the brim with that cute humour!
My apologies if this topic has been explored before, I tried to search for it but there's so many possible variations of the question.

Re: Which shmup would you like to see more of but through another genre?
Cho Aniki as an immersive VR(AR?) experience
Re: Which shmup would you like to see more of but through another genre?
Outzone as an Action-RPG. The core view is already fairly "Zelda" so it's not too much of a stretch to imagine opening up that world. I'm thinking of a more action-based Megadrive/Genesis Shadowgate sort of experience.
Formerly known as 8 1/2. I return on my second credit!

Mushihimesama but as a puzzle game like Uo-Poko. ;3

I haven't played any of the Cho Aniki games (there are multiple, right?) but on the surface it seems like games where the visual theme are a huge part of the identity and therefore a VR experience would be a natural next step! Of perhaps you're just kidding around and I've read it seriously like a penguin.

This is such a great idea! And I agree, the game really lends itself to something like that. It feels so "right" I'm kind of surprised something similar isn't already a thing.
That would be neat, and perhaps the already huge arsenal could be tweaked further and/or looked into with greater detail. Like visual changes and loadouts before each mission.
Oh my god, yes! All the colors and cool details, the eye candy level would be through the roof!

Ugh, someone's clearly stolen my amazing idea and made some ripoff game called Mushihime-Tama. I'm just joking, sorry, taking something ridiculous like Fixeight and making it into a third person Vanquish style shooter could be fun though.
Re: Which shmup would you like to see more of but through another genre?
I would love to see more of Under Defeat. I always felt that a ton of work was put into the setting, characters, and mechanical design and that it was a shame to only have it featured in a single game.
It could work well as a setting for strategy or tactical RPG genres for sure.

So something like Chaos Engine?
King's Field IV is the best Souls game.

Oh so it's already a reality, cool! I wonder how "CAVE" got away with making this game without making the developers of Mushihimesama sue them in the first place! Fixeight is similar to Outzone, right? I remember pastel colors... I really should google before posting, but here we are.

I agree! I haven't spent much time with Under Defeat but I remember there were much more to it than what I gathered from going off screenshots (brown, gray and dark green military style things). I should hook up my 360 again (missed the DC version when it came out, I went "I'll wait for the price to drop"... lol) and check it out in greater depth!evewalker wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 10:07 pm I would love to see more of Under Defeat. R-Type as a "Search-Action", like a 18+ version of Metroid...or even as a Survival Horror.
Re: Which shmup would you like to see more of but through another genre?
A tactics game set in the dour world of Ketsui seems like a shoo-in. At the very least, it'd be entertaining to see how many distinct helicopter units they could cram in there.
Perhaps style the gameplay after Knights in the Knightmare to keep a toe in shmup land.
Some of the ideas seem so obvious - open with a traditional linear shooter stage, have the boss drop an upgrade that lets you turn around like in Defender, and bam: Player expectations shattered, off to a strong start.

Like an actual on-foot metroid / resi game, or R-Type gameplay with a nonlinear level structure? Both could work, though the latter is something I've specifically wanted to see for ages.

an initial stage like R-Type, but the R-9A Arrowhead is destroyed and from then on it becomes an Axiom Verge-like, with maybe small shoot'em up sections (that's if it's a 2D game).Lander wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 1:42 pm A tactics game set in the dour world of Ketsui seems like a shoo-in. If it's 3D, same thing but the initial section is like Ace Combat and then it becomes like Dead Space, with sections that alternate between inside and outside the space base.
The final battle should also be Ace Combat style (or S.T.G if it were 2D).
I would like it if there was a system where you either "listen to your AI" or "absorb Bydo power", the more you decide to mutate, the more your onboard (or suit) AI will abandon you, to the point of even becoming hostile when it doesn't recognize more the player as an ally but as a threat.
Spoiler
I actually thought about it some time ago, for a possible project (which i will never do because i don't know how to program, at most i can do B.G.M haha
).
An R-Type style 2D SHMUPS, where an unnamed pilot is sent on a secret mission not recognized by the Earth government, in an apparently lost and remote sector on the edge of the unknown universe.
The mission is to penetrate and destroy a space base not marked on any interstellar map and of which communications are lost.
Only once you get there will you discover that the base was a research laboratory for biological weapons (Bydo-like).
The base is uninhabited, all the occupants have been transformed, furthermore the AI that defends the base continues to operate, and considers any intruder hostile.
The situation has degenerated beyond any possible nightmare!
Your ship also has an AI that will talk to us during the game (it suggests the most suitable route for the equipped weapon, the weak points of the bosses, and the most optimal weapons for the situations, it also has Auto-Fire... and no, cannot be selected from the menu, and makes Homing weapons work).
A robotic male voice similar to the announcer from Wipeout.
During the game at the end of each Stage you will have the choice based on the Route traveled (and its danger) of being contaminated. The more contaminated you are, the more you will have access to strange and unusual organic weapons, but after a certain threshold our AI will stop helping us, considering us hostile, and will be turned off manually by the Pilot.
In the normal ending (uncontaminated), once the evil AI has been defeated and after defeating "The End of Evolution" (Last Boss Name), while we return home, the AI on board the ship will reveal to us that it cannot make us return, and it will initiate a self-destruct protocol, because no one must witness what happened. Orders from above.
In the "bad" ending (highly contaminated), the evil AI will recognize us as a child of her, the supreme weapon she has always dreamed of, and will overwrite the AI present on the ship.
This will allow you to disable the programmed self-destruction, and therefore the final battle will also be different.
The command on earth will realize that the self-destruct protocol did not work, and therefore something went wrong, fearing the worst, they will therefore send the entire earth fleet against you, with the largest and most powerful flagship in the galaxy!
The REAL final battle must be a bit like the last battle in WakuWaku7...the camera zooms out more and more, more and more, because the flagship is COLOSSAL in size, it must be the largest ship ever appeared in a SHMUPS!!!!
Obviously in this clash we would not simply have control of our ship, but of the entire Space Base! (this is why it zooms out).
So the whole game literally becomes our ship
The battle must be heavily bullet hell.
5 or 6 Stages, multi-route, starting from deep space until reaching the center of the base and then leaving, in each Stage it must be an EXTREME situation.
- In Stage 1 we are in the space adjacent to the base, but one of the suns of this system collapses and explodes right in the background, temporarily disabling the AI (Auto-Pilot ShutDown).
- In stage 2, the defense systems are still off, but the cannons are at the edge of the level, inactive, scanners from the background (Oddworld style) search the area, if you move while the laser passes through you, the alarm system fire and not only will all the cannons and defenses be activated, but Elite enemies will also arrive in groups to destroy you, and it could also close the doors in front of you and force you to change the Route in progress.
- Stage 3, in the laboratory area, a chemical explosion blows a hole in the hull and sucks the entire sector out into space, including us, unless we can get through the airtight door before it closes (another sudden route change Therefore). The suction in the hull also resists the movements of our spacecraft and also sucks up the homing missiles if we have them.
- Stage 4, the enemy AI (which has a female voice and every now and then in the various stages reveals to us that it is observing us carefully, and that we are "the perfect guinea pig") will give free rein to its horrifying creations, and in the Boss Fight against it will even try to take control of our spacecraft (button smashing firewall defense phase).
- Stage 5 is practically a biomechanical horror in the deep heart of the base, at the deepest point we will release the bomb that they left us to demolish the entire station, but while we are about to abandon the ship and we are now in space, the "End of Evolution" , will break free, revealing itself as large as half the space base itself!
-Stage 6 is only the battle against the Terran fleet.

In this case i would have done it the other way around, the player has control of the enemies, and must prevent Tiger Schwert and Panzer Jäger from completing their mission, so it will be necessary to strategically position the units available along the entire island and try to resist as long as possible possible (Score Based therefore).Lander wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 1:42 pm A tactics game set in the dour world of Ketsui seems like a shoo-in. Ah obviously Tiger Schwert and Panzer Jäger play perfectly, so you can't really win, just hold on as long as possible!
Re: Which shmup would you like to see more of but through another genre?
That 'vania concept sort of reminds me of Returnal, at least insofar as the protagonist being given the option to embrace weird Xeno biohorror in exchange for power. Though they never went all the way with it as far as I know; more focused on mechanical consequences than the Axiom / Prime / Dread what even am I now vibe.
Kind of lines up with a little sight gag about slow scrolling that I've had in my head for a while; cutting to the enemy base between levels with a little "PLAYER SHIP IS HERE ->" map, and showing the endboss getting more and more agitated as it (very slowly) encroaches
This is a cool idea; kind of reminiscent of Counter Operative from Perfect Dark, except versus AI with a more tactical framing.Lemnear wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2024 4:32 pm In this case i would have done it the other way around, the player has control of the enemies, and must prevent Tiger Schwert and Panzer Jäger from completing their mission, so it will be necessary to strategically position the units available along the entire island and try to resist as long as possible possible (Score Based therefore).

Totally agree about Espgaluda's world! An RPG where you fight alongside the Aleste sisters cleaning up the bugs would be amazing. Great call on Steel Empire too, a steampunk metroidvania would be killer.
Re: Which shmup would you like to see more of but through another genre?
This is why I like TwinBee because he was just Konami's Mario. Man did everything and anything he wanted. I loved Rainbow Bell Adventure.
I wouldn't mind more attempts at tactics games. Not RPG's though. Like Advance Wars but DonPachi. I also wouldn't mind some of these games becoming Ace Combat type games for one go around. I remember when Konami put Axelay, TwinBee, Vic Viper and some other arcade ships in Air Force Delta Strike. Maybe a fuckoff big Super Shmup Bros PVP dogfighting game.

Re: Which shmup would you like to see more of but through another genre?
The addition of Vic Viper in Second Runner, along with the not-actually-that-impressive 3D Zoradius minigame, was a major factor in me caring about Zone of the Enders; carried me far enough to realise 2 is masterful in its own right, at least.
So I'd be well down for a Super Robot Wars style megacrossover framed through the lens of Ace Combat, especially if it could capture that single-tear "beauty of flight" vibe that AC has always been so good at exploiting.

So... more Aerofighters Assault 64?
I found that one real charming, too, and I was genuinely surprised that it didn't morph into a Cuphead-style half-and-half with platforming sections.Starfighter wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 6:44 pmHazelnut Hex platformer filled to the brim with that cute humour!
I can totally see this working as a Stardew Valley total conversion - instead of farming crops, you're manufacturing rivets and clockwork gears in your little workshop, keeping neighbouring factory workers motivated as you get to know them, all working shoulder to shoulder for the war effort *salute*Starfighter wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2024 6:44 pmI'd love to spend some more time in the company of the Silverhead in Steel Empire/Empire of Steel and check out what other steampunk machines they have - perhaps as a mechanic?!

Cotton as a 3D action platformer! I know the setting may seem generic, but if it has art direction similar to Panorama I'm sure it can be fantastical.
Elemental crystals could change how you attack, flying would be hard to implement but it could be changed to a simple glide so it's not completely OP.

SAR Search and Rescue as an MV. It has the perfect theme and setup for it, to the degree that I think it's what the game would actually be if it got made in the modern age.
Re: Which shmup would you like to see more of but through another genre?
Gradius years and years ago was supposed to get a racing game in arcades with only a single screenshot of it ever being shown (to my knowledge). I would have liked to see that come to fruition. At least he's playable in Krazy Racers.
A Gradius combat racing game with an adaptation of the power meter from the original games would actually be a REALLY cool idea.

Re: Which shmup would you like to see more of but through another genre?
Ikaruga as another Treasure rail shooter would be awesome, I always thought the world, music and those little blurbs at the start of every chapter made the game really mysterious and ripe for further exploration. That's probably why I like Sin and Punishment (N64) so much, because it's basically beta Ikaruga + Neon Genesis Evangelion. Guwange would make a pretty cool character action game, maybe led by Clover team. The music is super cool, especially Stage 2 and the bosses give a Junji Ito vibe, especially the weird CatSpider.

I’ve always really liked the R-Type universe. R-Type Delta brought in some really cool things. Maybe a metroidvania or immersive sim in that world would be cool.
