shmups forum survives yet another relocation.

Post by system11 »

Oh well - just when it was all looking so positive too. In fact, that very day I had planned to post a thread thanking everyone for making this a decent place. The problems with hosting seemed to be behind us, things had settled back in, but THEN!

Then Siteground decided to suspend our account for using too much CPU power. It didn't seem to occur to them that we have a lot of SQL queries greater than 2 seconds, because their server is overloaded anyway. It was very badly handled, I was given no warning, and had to just move the site - faced with either a $90 a month bill, or trying to talk to their scripted robots in support.

This new host is temporary, but the move won't be for a long time yet. When it does happen, it'll be properly organised. There's additional work I want to do with the codebase on here - again, this should be planned outages with a migration plan. Yeah - nothing like taking your work home with you ;-)

The new main URL for the forum is 'shmups.system11.org'. That's my domain - and switching to this gives me direct (and quick) control if changes need to be made. The server is one I run too, clean install built purely for the forum.

The old URL will work too, when the people who host the DNS finally do something about the request Malc placed, yesterday. If anything seems wrong or broken, please let me know - I've tested most of it. I'll send a mass email out over the weekend if no issues are reported then. Of course, it looks like several people have already noticed that it's reopened.

We lost zero data, except for posts people may have been halfway through writing when it was suspended. I also found time to upgrade the software to the latest version, and fix the template in a few places. A few users were kind enough to design a favicon for us (never had one before), after looking at them all in bookmark lists and so on, I chose the one Ceph made. Not quite worked out how to make it appear reliably yet - anyone got any experience with them?

Thanks for bringing back the forum (again), bloodf.
At least we know that the place is in capable hands ^_^
That was a bit shitty how they just suspended the account without a warning though.
How many forums is it that Shmups has had so far now? Six? ^_-

Awesome job, bloodflowers. Your professionalism is a great value to this site. Thanks for the great work done in this site migration, and in supporting the systems over the past year for the benefit of shmup fans globally.

Thanks for your dedication bloodflowers.

In the case the shmups forum is in some financial need, I'd be happy to donate a little bit every once in a while to keep things going smoothly.

Yes, we member of the shmups forum is willing to contribute financial. And I think we should pay our share for the forum maintenance cost. :o

And this is not much, there are over 1,000+ members registered in this forum, and if only 10% of us did contribute, and each contribut an average of $5 a year. Minus the PayPal charges there should still be $400+. Think about it.

May be we could donate some of our unwanted game/system for sale to raise fund for the forum.

Great work getting the forum going again. Without this forum, I'd have nothing to do on the interweb.
Feedback will set you free.

Thanks for the offers of donations guys, but we don't need any at this time.

I'd love to say we do, but I'll have to be honest - at the moment the outgoings are low to non existant (well, if the old hosts refund the newly paid up subscription as they bloody well should).

We'd probably just spend the money on an alcohol fuelled tour of the local lap dancing clubs, possibly some take-out pizza too. If you want to sponsor this kind of behaviour, feel free to send us cash :)
