Steam SHMUP Fest (2023) - September 25 to October 2

Steam will have their first "festival" dedicated to shmups from September 25 to October 2.

Usually, these events are interesting, since they feature developer streams/interviews, sales, exclusive demos for upcoming games, and more.
Many developers also use these to announce new titles/PC ports.

I'm curious about what we'll see then.

I don't think I have anything in particular on my wishlist from this genre right now, come to think of it. A few horis that I've held off on just because they're horis that I might give a chance if they get a huge discount but... Mostly I'm hoping for new stuff being announced and perhaps a few interviews. Some insight into today's world of shmup development would be pretty interesting. The one thing I know I won't be interested in is genre fusing and stuff like that. I haven't grown tired of the 5-6 stages, classic shoot 'em up, danmaku formula yet.

All I want is one or two surprise releases, like Ray’z Arcade Chronology, whose Steam release date remains unknown, so I'm hoping for an out of the blue "now available" announcement.

If I was a dreamer, I would dare expect Hamster to come to their senses, and start releasing the Arcade Archives series of titles on Steam, but I don't see that happening.

Sadly, outside of a few deals, and probably some free Steam chat icons/emoticons (like they had on similar recent events), I don't see much coming from it.
But, since the Tokyo Game Show 2023 runs during this particular time period, maybe I'll be positively surprised with a new announcement or two.

I just released a free demo of Rival Megagun on Steam for the upcoming Shmup Fest! The demo includes two of the seven playable ships, multiplayer PVP (local and online), and two stages of the single-player arcade mode.

That trailer is quite disappointing, since it goes heavily on twin stick shooters, and barely shows any classic shmups.

I remain hopeful that we may see a couple of new titles or announcements (for example, a couple of titles that have a "coming soon" date on Steam, and are already available in other platforms, may get a surprise release), but that trailer does make it clear that most developers and publishers participating have a very tenuous connection to the genre, at best.

Yes, that's disappointing.
We are participating, and we know several developers who were rejected with what are clearly shmups, like Nanoforce or Verisim Skies.
We were rejected the 1st time too, because "we were not part of the genre", with a product called SHMUP Creator, used to make shmups :/
But in the end, Steam is promoting what sells, so Vampire clones more than danmakus.

Man, that sucks.

When I first saw the name of the event, I was really hoping it would be a good way to further showcase the growing number of indie shmups that are being released.

Sadly, it seems their understanding of "shmup" is whatever is included on their user tags, and plenty of users place the shmup tag on games that are nothing like the genre as we know it.

A bunch of Japanese developers I follow will have their games discounted, but outside of that, I'm now not very hopeful about this event, especially since even the participating shmup developers risk being "swamped" in a sea of games that have nothing to do with the genre, and who might get better featured/promoted (and that trailer seems to point in that direction).

At first I was disappointed that the event I've been looking forward to for months probably isn't going to be what I imagined (well, imagined and imagined, what they explicitly said it would be) - but ultimately I don't really care, if they want to be wrong about what a genre is then that's their business. I'll live, you know? But this:

And yet, Radiant Silvergun is nowhere in sight, despite Ray'z stealthy steam drop, lol. But yeah, the usual titles I see (that are already on my library), are on sale too. Except for a few... (like both of Studio Siesta's games [Varstray and Trouble Witches Origin] and the modern ports of CAVE titles [Akai Katana Shin and DeathSmiles I/II]. Even Castle of Shikigami 2 isn't on sale either, but the first one is, oddly enough.)

There are a lot of good deals.
I can highly recommend Interstellar Sentinel, it is a great Shmup Creator game on sale for the first time.
I picked up many more like Ikusaaan, Gunvein, RefRain, Super Zyx and others.
Looks like it was just a misleading promo video.

I'm not sure if I made it to the end of the list, but I made it to where the list crashed. So I guess that's where it ends for me (and there's NO WAY I'm clicking through all of that again to find out)

Weirdly, my biggest disappointment was that none of the 'nu' Atari titles are on sale. As I've been eyeballing the Black Widow one, but don't want to spend $10 to confirm it's lame.

And also, if you want to search through the sale with a bit more tools than Steam provides then I highly recommend SteamDB! Since a lot of developers tag their games as shmups the genre sorting is kind of pointless though, so I still had to go through all the games manually in this case.

Here's the shmups I could find in the fest sale!

Some omissions I'd noticed just glancing at the list is Steredenn at $3.80, Space Invaders Extreme for $8, Pang Adventures for $2, and (by extension) The Bug Butcher at $2.40

Couple things buried in the list, that aren't strict S H M U P Z are

The OG twin-stick deal Crimsonland for $2 (you WILL get two dollars worth), and Twin Ruin a twin-stick, polarity switching deal for $1.80. Honestly, I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but it has a GREAT name (even if it, and the logo were 'inspired' by Ruiner), a great look, and the dev once posted here about a live stream they were doing. So I went to the stream, only to find them asleep at the computer with the debug console open. I feel that's worth $1.80...

FunktionJCB: My pleasure! It's so many that I almost felt like "well, this is just like copy pasting the entire sale" but I assure you, there were a lot of games I had to scroll past to get these, which all are shmups or very close interpretations/experimental shmups.

m.sniffles.esq: Oh that's right, the Space Invader-style of shmups are shmups as well. My bad! I didn't include any "fixed at the bottom only dodging left and right" shmups I think... But perhaps we should, and that means the list can be even longer! I must say, it's pretty nice.

Yup, as Suny said, Nanoforce tactical surgeon fighter is in shmupfest (and 30% off), no need to hesitate!!!!

Talking about steam bots, it's surprising that some games are in shmupfest (fps, run'gun or else....)

My story :
I had to send two special requests and talk with a human (a steam guy) he told me to try again after the second request and it was all right.
It's a shame, I built Nanoforce aroud many ideas or picked up there and there in my favorite games.

Maybe they thought Nanoforce was a surgeon simulator....
