DC Battery Mod kit - which to get CR2032 or ML2032

Post by azmun »

I'm considering buying a Dreamcast battery mod kit but getting conflicting reports. One says to stick to the original 3V ML2032 rechargeable coin cell battery and argues that the other kits (e.g. CR2032 or LI2032 3.6V batteries) can damage our Dreamcast since the 3.6V is too high of a voltage. The others advises to get the CR2032 since they are easier and cheaper to source, last longer. They come in 3V and require a diode to block the recharge path.

I like using the ML2032, opening up the dreamcast every 3-ish months isn't for me. iirc Sega uses 100, 65 and 45 mah batteries, but those 100mah batteries are rare/expensive now.

A CR2032 can have a capacity of 240mAh so would run out in around 74 days, if we assume no losses from the diode to disable the charging circuitry. Of course, then you have to take it out and replace it with a brand new one, whereas with the rechargeable battery you can just play your Dreamcast for a bit and it'll charge up again until it stops holding a charge 10-20 years down the line.
@VEGETA has designed a board that uses a 18650 battery, I think he's still testing it out though but sounds promising

yes, it is 18650 which is A LOT more bigger than required and than original while being very cheap and available.

I am thinking of selling it for 50$ but I hope I can get it down to 40$. Will 50 or 45 be ok with most people?
