getting Ordyne

Post by doctorx0079 »

Okay, I don't have space or $$ for my own cab, so, what home releases of Ordyne are there? Which is the best, which is the cheapest/easiest to get??

There's the PC Engine/TG16 Ordyne and there's the Namco Museum Vol.4 Ordyne. That's it, I believe. The former can probably be found for peanuts.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Bumping this to ask: What's the general take on this game among the experts here? Worth getting?

I'd say try it if you fancy easier Parodius stuff and don't mind a scoring system that's heavily based on luck.

Ordyne is fun enough that the scoring doesn't really matter. It's a fun game with neat ideas and levels (I love the rotating-block stuff). It's a solid, engaging shmup.

Ordyne is playable and gorgeous (first ever game sporting hardware sprite rotation, predating even Assault?) and that whole Namco Museum volume on PSX is full of win.

Sounds like I've got to check it out. I usually like Namco shmups quite a lot and cute-em-ups are my favorite subgenre, so as long as it's not terrible I'm going to pick up that Namco Museum volume. Thanks for the responses!

All six PS1 Namco Museums (including the Japan-only Encore) are worth getting imo. The game selection is unfortunately sometimes novelty-oriented (it's the only explanation for Wonder Momo, and where the hell are Galaga '88, Rolling Thunder 2 and Phelios?). But the porting quality is generally superb and there are some great games that I'd have gladly purchased individually (Galaxian trilogy, Baraduke, Valkyrie, Rolling Thunder, Dragon Spirit, Dragon Saber and my favourites, the immensely hardcore seek & destroy tank shooter Assault and its Black Label, Assault Plus).

Capcom Generation Vols 1-4 are similarly great (can't vouch for 5/SF2 collection). I wish both of these series had ran for another couple volumes.

That's awesome news, BIL, because I took a chance the other day and bought 3 of the 6 Museum volumes from Play-Asia. Still need to get the one with Ordyne on it. I'm really looking forward to exploring these collections.
