PS5 720p though hdmi to component

Post by rt505 »

Hello All,

I've been testing converters for an edge use case I have to convert PS5 HDMI to Component so I can run it through a Retrotink 5x and add a FV310 filter to it at 1080p. Very edge case. In any case, I wasn't happy with my Portta HDMI to component and I've met many others who weren't so I picked up a Pro Signal HDMI to Component from CPC Farnell and a HDFury III instead to try to improve my problems. I tested both the Pro Signal and HDFury through the Retrotink 5x and straight to LCD component enabled monitor. The images are shown below. I tried various HDMI cables and component cables to weed out any issues with cabling, but results were the same. HDFury discord recommending here in the off-chance that someone might have an opinion of why a) this would happen in the first place, i.e., is it an artefact of PS5 720p being routed through a component conversion and/or b) why the Pro Signal would be LESS prone to ghosting than the HDFury, if that is indeed the case.

Original comms to HDFury below:

I’ve received my HDFury III order (Order #2173). Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be working for my particular use case very well. I’m currently using a Pro Signal hdmi to component adapter instead, I’ve included an image beneath which contains; top as original HDMI, middle pro signal hdmi to component, bottom hdfury hdmi to component. Although the prosignal hdmi to component isn’t perfect, the ghosting is much less noticeable than the hdfury.

Example 1: PS5 at 720p going to retrotink 5x (no filter, default 1080) via Pro Signal HDMI to Component (middle) or HDFury (bottom), OR straight to LG C1 (HDMI straight, top)

Example 2: Same thing but no retrotink 5x, going to a component enabled LCD monitor instead

As you can see, the HDFury (being the bottom of both images) produces the worst output. The Pro Signal can be masked with a scanline filter (the reason I’m passing a PS5 at 720p to a retrotink 5x to scale to 1080/1440 with a filter for a specific game, but also my xbox 360 and ps3 are going through the same thing), but HDFury still has ghosting after applying a scanline filter. To note, the following features are disabled on the PS5 in all examples, ALLM (which the HDFury couldn’t support at all, it kept losing sync), HDR and deep colour.
