Game Inn Namiki -- who went?
I've been chatting over on the Magatta Banana website - home to Zuho, who is apparently a chic who is shit hot at some Cave shooting games (she's done both Progear loops, and up to 2-5 on Ketsui).
Anyways, I mentioned shmups.com, and she was telling me about a time that she met 5 gaijin (Americans) at Game Inn Namiki in Meidaimae, with a list of top-players they wanted to see in action. They didn't speak Japanese though. She did a special report of it on her page which is good for a few laughs, and was wondering if the other parties involved did the same. If so, she was wanting to see it.
I guess the usual suspect would've been Eight One, but I doubt he would've looked so out of place. There's a photo of one of them on the special report link above.

I know exactly where you're talking about. It'd be a bit out of the way for me, though.
If she was at Seven Island in Yokohama (Nishiguchi), then that'd be a different story...

So Lunar -- you're sure that guy is Italian, not American? SHe'll be surprised at that. Does he have a website of any type? Does he hang out at Neo Arcadia forums at all? Anyways, thanks for the tip. That's crazy. They apparently had a really good time, and was very surprised that someone from so far away would show up w/ a list of famous players.
Zuho does not lurk these forums. She said her English is lousy, but I'm trying to convince her to jump in a few HS threads.Japanese people lurk our forums?

I was about to say...that's probably someone in Europe. If they were American, there would have been some reports on the forum here for sure. I get the impression that more Europeans are familiar with the top shooting game player in Japan (and the old Namiki arcade). American shooting fan seem to not care so much about them.LUNardei wrote:It's confirmed! I just posted on her forums. We'll see what she says. I'm still slapping myself in the balls for living literally about a 2 minute walk from that place for a year and a half and not really going. Oh, well -- I was dirt poor then, and not into the arcade scene at all.

Is anyone willing to take the time to quickly translate the article in question? I'm not entirely Japanese literate, and am very interested in reading the thing without wading through the gibberish that Infoseek's machine translator throws out. ^_^

He's retrogame, and the guy saying "oh Wonderful" must be Gemant. They were looking for those videos, as well (surely for Syo's stuff). To be exact, Gemant's the leading guru of scores and super-plays, and the guy behind the AIVA high-score tabs.I wonder why she says/thinks they were americans though, maybe the standard idea "foreigner=american": I doubt that anyone from that group speaks American English, so to speak
Funny how small the world is, if you focus on some specific fields, uh?

She posted in her BBS that she would change it (and was thankful for finding out the truth).
Here's a rough idea (I'll translate it as American). Kind of slapped together, but you get the idea.
It was a clear Saturday.
As usual, at night, I headed to Namiki.
Employee H: Oh, no!!!!!!!!!!!
Zuho: ?????
Something terrible has happened at Namiki!!
Employee H: Someone from America's here!!!
Perhaps an American fan here to gather ideas on Japanese arcades? As I entered, sure enough there were 4 or 5 Americans. The already thing oxygen in Namiki grows even thinner. And, in their hands... [image shown]
Written on the paper were many arcades they planned to visit. I don't know where they got the information, but they had details on Namiki down to it's address.
Furthermore, there objective "To meet Japanese Super Pleyer". And also in their hand... [image]
It seems they someohow made a list of Super Players they wanted to meet in Japan.
What's that?
Super Pleyer:
Gunbird: SYO
PRogia Storm: .... (snip)
That's to say they came to see Gunbird, Progear, Shikigami 2 and Viewpoint players (Games currently played in America). Why Progear? (When there's DOJ, Ketsui, Ikaruga, and others
)
And then, the dreaded words...
Employee H: Zuho-san, why don't you keep us busy with Progear until _____-san gets here.
Huh?
Playfor all these foreigners?
Employee H: Go ahead. It'll help pass the time.
And so, I started Progear.
_____-san, hurry up and get here. Eerrr... I mean please come quickly.
<Progear Starts>
So as I played, I was watched by the group
[image -- not actual one shown]
And they talked behind me.
Below is a recreation of what the shop keep and visitors were talking about.
I started with stage 1, but as usual, couldn't connect everything, so as usual, I trashed the game and put in a coin. Then trashed and put in a coin. Trashed it and put in another coin.
Watching this...
Gaijin: What?
Employee: It is... uh.... Japaense Rencoin (credit freed)
Gaijin: Oh.... Rencoin!!!
<While watching me credit feed>
Gaijin: Why? Repeat Endless?
Employee: S-S-Score up! Score up!!!
Even his commentary is rough.
Disregarding their conversation, I play Progear.
Like I usually do, I get killed on 1-4.
Gaijin: Oh, no!!!!!
He felt bad for me.
Sorry, I can't laugh and play at the same time. As he was saying "No----" on 1-4, I lose 3 more ships. It was truly a wasted game. Then...
Gaijin: [stares with eyes of hope].
Okay. I'll do it. I'll continue.
That's fine. He should watch _____-san do the first loop.
2nd loop starts. The fight starts here. I'll regain my honor from that terrible 1st lop. <snip -- sorry, I don't have my creative hat on today, GP>
2-2 final boss form starts
<sound effects>
Gaijin: Woo---- wonderful--- wooo!
I can't die with him watching so contently.
Clear! And what should be ranked the highest, was being able to finish while not getting all giggly at his cheers of excitement.
And then, 2-3 was a no miss, no bomb, and I did okay on the boss. 2-4 until the boss as well was a no miss no bomb run. I was somehow able to connect everything on the 2nd loop.
And thus, my play finished.
Several pictures were taken while playing, and we took one together afterwards.
It seems while I was playing, Employee H gave my introduction.
Employee: She's a 99-retry player
Gaijin: Oh.... Max....!
What a great introduction!!!
As he points to the high score card next to Progear, he says, "She is UED", but with a smile!!!
What's that about? I haven't gotten close to that score!
Ooohhhh.... You....
Oni!
Devil! (Laughs)
True Boss!!!!?!?!
Oh, man. (Sorry, UED-sama).
They also watched some Gunbird and Shikigami 2. Many points of doubt as they watch my die at the first part of stage 1 of Rayforce.
Gaijin: Why? Why? Why?
As each voice resonates....
Employee: Score up! Score up! Score up! Score uu-----p!
It was an evening made up mostly of the above conversation.
And they only got to mee one of the people they wanted to meet. And that is, SYO-sama.
Gaijin: Oh!
Huh? He put his hands together like he was praying to him
Employee: You've studied Japan well.
Gaijin: yes, we love Japanese Culture
... well, it wasn't exactly like that, but....
And the other Progear player they wanted to meet came too late, so they coudln't meet him.
A: What were you doing?
B: What'd you think? I was sleeping!
They took many pictures while inside. Perhaps they've posted them up on ther website as well? I should've asked them the address!!!!
I wonder what their impression of the place was.

Indeed, no? I was big time into Virtua Fighter 4 when I was there. I got to meet, play against, and shake hands with no doubt, some of the best players in the world... on several non-consecutive occasions.Funny how small the world is, if you focus on some specific fields, uh?

Thanks for the translation, GP. ^_^
Quite a funny story.
"Why don't you keep 'em busy with Progear?"
"Errr... WHAT?!"
Seems like Zuho is unable to play when there are spectators ^_^

Take heed, people. Let's try to at least act polite.GaijinPunch wrote:And guys -- considering I've pointed to this thread on the forum there you might want to edit up the posts. Hardly inviting, even though it is PC.
