Safely shipping 22” PVM from UK to DK

Post by kamiboy »

Yo

On more or less a whim I decided to jump on a, for me, somewhat holy grail CRT. A SONY PVM 2130.

The seller wanted to local pickup only, but is willing to humor my international shenanigans as long as I take care of everything. So long as some guys show up and pick up the unit he doesn’t care.

So the question is which guys, and how it should all be done?

Anyone have experience with this sort of thing who can give me some pointers on how to increase the chances of the item showing up intact and functional instead of as an unsolvable puzzle piece?

Which shipping option would be best to go with where they can take care of everything?

I think the 2130 weighs in the order of 30kg, and it goes without saying that the seller doesn’t happen to have a flight case, or any case laying around to ship it in?

The only practical factoid I remember having absorbed from somewhere regarding this is that CRT’s are best shipped face down. Not sure if true, but makes sense to not put pressure in the neck board.

Advice and tested life experiences are welcome.

tube facing down, heavily wrapped in bubblewrap and strapped onto a wooden palette. Before brexit this was something that could be done for around 80-100 EUR. Don't know how much more expensive the import/export paperwork is going to be these days.

A few years ago I had to ship a 16" TV from Italy to the UK. The thing I thought would have helped the most to get that thing safely to the recipient (which it did) is *thick* foam sheets on all sides (much like in a flight case).

That's 8cm foam (taken from a discarded sunbed cushion). For your monitor, which is heavier, I wouldn't use anything thinner so 8-10cm should do. Also, a double box or at least a double wave single box is recommended. I didn't pallet my package (it wouldn't be worth for that) but if you do, don't skip the foam sheets. And lots of prayers...

This is how I usually ship my CRTs, and all 11 of them arrived safely.

Hi!

I'm shipping monitors around EU quite frequently so I might give You some ideas :)

If You want to do it properly, a pallet is the only way. I recently shipped a BVM 2011P from Poland to Sweeden (or it might have been Denmark ) and this a quite beast of a monitor that weights about 40kg.

Image

I wraped it in some bubble wrap

Image

Took a 60x60x60 high quality box and some styrophoam. The most important part is to secure the bottom. I usually put around 10-12cm of styro at the bottom.
Image

Put the monitor inside, secure the corners, and fill empty spaces. I used peanuts here, not the best, but they are enough.

Image

Put styro at the top, wrap the box with shrink wrap, and put it on a 120x80 pallet:

If You want to use belts like this, better hide them or they might get stolen

Image

This is pretty much it. Ofcourse this is the minimum that You need to do, to do it safely. Ofcourse You can do better than that, like get a bigger box, add more styro etc. Or try some other packing material.

Take a good shipping company and You should be good to go.

As for putting the monitor face down, it might be a good idea when shipping CRT TV's but not really with pro monitors like this. They were not desinged to be transported in that position. With their cube design, the weight is distributed pretty enenly. Putting it face down is safe for the tube, but it might damage the bezel if it's plastic or knobs/buttons if the monitor has them. Especially if the monitor is heavy. Trust me I've seen that :/

As I said I've done this quite a few times to various destinations in the EU and never had any issues. Ofcourse this BVM was dellivered in one piece without any issues as well ;)

Thanks for the tips, alas packing is up to the whim of the shipper. I'll ask him if he can replicate any of the above steps. The biggest problem will likely be how to get hold of all the material. Such as the pallet to out the monitor on. That has to be secured by the shipper right? Or can the shipping company provide one? That is nothing to say about a box big enough to contain the monitor and all the packing material.

Where would one even get stuff like that? I doubt the seller will be able or willing to secure these things himself.

If anyone has lead on a reputable shipping company up for this task let me know. Google is a jungle for this kind of thing, and I was very severely burned by a bad company in the past.

Why are you buying a 2130 from the UK and not from Germany? Is the price that good? If it is expensive on top of it all, I'd skip this one if I were you and get the next one that pops up on https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/

If you're hellbent on buying one from the UK, maybe consider sending the seller the packing material beforehand. That way you're upping the chance that he'll do a decent job of packing it.

@Namingway_PL
Is that a D32 or A32 in the back there?? :D

Well the only reason why I wanted this unit is because it is a very mint unit owned by a retro gamer. Most pro monitors that pop up for sale have had a rough life of long service, with accompanying dim, dull image quality. I once owned a mint 2530 and know first hand what a stunning picture a relatively low operating hours XX30 series CRT can produce, compared to one on its last leg.

Anyway, as luck would have it the seller got a local buyer and this deal fell through. While I doubt I’ll ever have the opportunity to get my hands on a low hours XX30 series PVM again, I am somewhat relieved to not have to wade any longer in the jungle of shipping companies.

Finding a “reasonably” priced shipping provider for something as bulky and heavy as a CRT is an absolute quagmire of shady websites with fake quotes and outright scams. i was starting to doubt I could find anything below 300gbp.

Of course even if I did find a good shipping provider there is the issue of post brexit import fees to contend with, and the risk of a broken unit arriving at my door being carried on my shoulders alone.

I think I’ll keep an eye on ebay.de in the future though… hell, for the right price even a non mint XX30 might be worth a peek.
