Haven't played Shienryu II, but the origional is worth $25 alone (although there is a cheaper budget release titled Geki-oh: Shooting King for the U.S. PS1). Shienryu is a heavily inspired Toaplan esque shmup.
Artistic wise, it's like a mix between Raiden and Truxton with a bit of manic style thrown in. It has a basic scoring system (shoot = points, no chaining), 3 power up types, speed up increase icons, and of coarse bombs, which are plentiful.

I found the following review helpful, and I'm glad I got the game.

One thing to note about Geki-Oh is that, while it has a few other play modes in it (most nothing to write home about, some fun though), it doesn't include tate mode...the PS2 port has it, but neither of the above ports of the original Shienryu save high scores.Xexyz wrote:Haven't played Shienryu II, but the origional is worth $25 alone (although there is a cheaper budget release titled Geki-oh: Shooting King for the U.S. PS1).
In any event, while I don't find either game on the pack to be extraordinary or anything like that, for the price it's not a bad deal at all. Recently they actually released a "double pack" of it, which packages both of the Shienryus with some other "Simple" release...and I think, oddly enough, it might be even cheaper than buying the Shienryu pack by itself.

That's right. You get the original Shienryu and Shienryu Explosion. But be careful about what you order: there is also a double pack that is similar but has some helicopter sim included.tekneekz wrote:for that link you showed me is that one of the game it comes with. does it come with two games in one?

Here's the "double pack" in case you're interested:

Still has both Shienryus on it, plus whatever the helicopter thing is...same exact price on PA. IIRC on YesAsia it's actually cheaper.

Shienryu: Very good port on PS2. Tate and low res! Just like the excellent Saturn port. I'm not 100% sure the PS2 version saves scores, but the Saturn one does.
Shienryu Explosion: Pretty easy, but it actually has a pretty complex and very enjoyable scoring system! I think this is a pretty cool and very underrated game.

It's worth it for Shienryu Explosion alone; which is a fantastic oldschool shmup. And Shienryu is arcade-perfect, although it's not full-screen in this port, which is odd considering that it's an ST-V shmup.tekneekz wrote:this game any good i might order it for my collection since its only 25 bucks.

It is full screen in TATE mode. I haven't played this in a long, but I'm pretty sure I remeber it supporting TATE on the PS2 version...?dave4shmups wrote:It's worth it for Shienryu Explosion alone; which is a fantastic oldschool shmup. I do concur on Explosion. A nice little shooter. Not ugly at all... maybe a bit uninspired is more true. But the scoring system more than makes up for it. It kind of combines gimmicks from more modern shooters of the past decade. Very enjoyable. And just an FYI, Explosion is a vert, but isn't TATE, ala Mars Matrix/GigaWing 2.
A no-brainer. For the price, this should definitely be in your collection.

Yep, as was said in an earlier post, it includes tate mode, and also has a low-res option. The only thing it's missing is the high-score save...an odd omission, since Shienryu Explosion has it.subcons wrote:It is full screen in TATE mode. Shienryu Explosion is designed to play in yoko mode, so you don't need to worry about tate for that one.
As for Shienryu, there is a way to access an Options menu, which includes the tate options, from the title screen, though it's done in a weird way, I forget exactly how...I think when the blinking text says "Press Start," you have to press a certain direction on the control pad (I forget which) to change the blinking text to "Options Menu," or something like that. Fiddle around a bit, sorry I couldn't remember more specifically.

CIT pretty much said it all here. What I don't know is Shienryu Explosion got a complex scoring system, 1cc it on my first attempt then sold the game in favour of the Saturn verion.CIT wrote:Shienryu: Very good port on PS2. i currently own the pal version and i can't play ps2 imports but as soon as i can get my hands on a slid etool i'll be getting the import to get rid of those nasty borders and lack of 60hz. explosion would be great with the higher speed and full screen as a nice pick up and play shmups wiht an interesting scoring mechanic.

OK, my 2-in-1 pack came, and interestingly enough I've spent more time playing The Helicopter.
For anybody else who has played this game, I'm stuck at one of the missions in the school, something to do with washing windows, but I don't know what I'm supposed to do. I can barely read what the teacher says, I'm guessing I have to shoot the windows with the cleaner, and then blow dry them? Help...?
Oh, and this game has nudity!
edit: nevermind, I figured it out...

I was thinking of buying this as well. There's a video on youtube (actually the guy has countless Simple Series promo videos) of this game and it looked quite interesting. For the price you can't go wrong, I suppose?
Although I'm a bit cautious of Saturn shooting titles. The last one I played was Sexy Parodius, and, well....

From here it sounds a bit odd to be wary of a shooter just because it was released on a certain system...after all, Sexy Parodius was also released on PS1, and apparently plays pretty much the same on both systems. And heck, if you don't like the Gradius/Parodius style, it's not going to matter what system you play it on, heh heh.Arznei wrote:Although I'm a bit cautious of Saturn shooting titles. As for Shienryu itself, most people are tempted to compare it to Raiden in terms of its "style." Shienryu Explosion, for its part, has only appeared on PS2, and has a more in-depth scoring system (read the review on the shmups.com main page, it explains it pretty well), though it's also easier.
