OK, I understand why NiGHTS is awesome now...

Post by Tomtom »

I've had this game for quite a while, just kinda picking it up and playing it for a few minutes here and there, not really appreciating it. For some reason I kept dying at the Frozen Bell boss, and blah blah blah ANYWAY. So today I had the desire to play it, and my goodness, it all just clicked together for me. First I beat Frozen Bell, which was nice. Stick Canyon took my breath away, zipping along the rollercoaster segments, flying higher and higher through that big steel tower, the section where the rings start combusting and the world melts around you, just amazing. The final stage, though...so beautiful. It's been a long time since I cried while playing a video game, but that did it, Elliot jumping off the end of the world and coming up again, flying through innumerable rings with some of the greatest BGM ever floating along behind it. I think I'll be replaying this one often indeed. Can't wait to beat it with Claire and get the other half of the level.

Anyway, that's my rant for the moment. Off to get some huge links, or I don't know, study or something.

I never was able to get into Nights. Even when it first came out with that analog control pad, I never saw what was so special about it. Although I will admit its good and original, its just not for me. I find it extremely boring flying around and collecting blue orbs under the time limit.
I guess basically its an action platformer, but without the "platforms". That might explain my dislike, as I 've never been a big fan of platformers either. (That includes Mario,Sonic, Rayman, etc)

Eh, not really. There are two ways of enjoying Nights: fly around and enjoy the scenery (boring), and practicing linking and improving your score (more interesting).

Nights is AWESOME.

The "Improve your score" way of playing is the way to go. It's incredibly how much skill you need to get good scores. And it's a lot more exciting than memorizing chains in Dodonpachi :)

Nights is the best game on Sega Saturn. It´s worth owning the system for.

To be honest, back when I bought a Saturn...before I knew of those amazing shmups from Japan, I bought a Saturn for Sega Rally,Panzer Dragoon 1&2 and Galactic Attack!
I do own Nights, but like I said, I really don't get all "warm and fuzzy" playing it.

I'm really outnumbered here...
Thats ok, I still don't care much for Nights.

I care enough about it not to sell it though...so, all you Sega fanboyz can relax a little more now.

cool, very cool... But sega fans wanted Sonic. Launching Saturn without a strong Sonic title is considered one of the worst errors Sega has ever done.

I love "NiGHTS into dreams" and for a while i really wanted a sequel/remake for the DC/PS2 or GC, but it looks like it will never happen. The graphics look a little ropy now but the gameplay and the atmosphere are timeless. "Christmas NiGHTS" has some great unlockables too. Stunning stuff!

Never say never. The game has too much of a cult following to be totally forgotten.

I mean, the make sequels of everything, really.

Heh, from what I played of it I really wasn't all that taken with it myself, but then again I've never been a fan of the Sonic games either...always seemed a bit too reliant on gimmicks for my taste. But who knows, maybe it'll "click" for me someday too...in any case, it hasn't yet.

But Naka himself said he doesn't want to make a sequel. What an arrogant jerk.

Nights Return to Dreams on the Cube or the Box would be lovely.

Potentially offensive :!: Mods, take action.

Nights is a very fun game, although I don't understand how Sega expected to sell a flying purple jester to Americans. If the teletubbies are homosexual propaganda, what chance does Nights stand?

Perhaps you could say that of most any VG, but I was never too taken by the gimmicks used in the above games...with Sonic, for instance, it was his speed, but I found that it encouraged just holding down 'forward' on the control pad and going "ooh" as he sped past everything: if you tried to slow down and explore the levels to find stuff, you'd find yourself skidding off of cliffs and into things, since the control scheme was built for simple stunts, not precision. I somehow felt a lot of the same "vibe" from Nights, though not as much as I had with Sonic...I'm not trying to insult the tastes of Sonic fans or whatnot (I'm no Mario fanboy either...I disliked Yoshi's Island), but I always saw misgivings in those games, all the way up through Sonic Adventure (plus the bad camera there), that most others didn't. Perhaps I'm just too picky...

best game ever indeed, I think 8) Even the graphics still look OK today, and if a sequel was ever released it would make me buy the system it's on instantly.
...and suddenly, a very freaky wormhole opened, and 4 3-foot tall market analysts fell out...

Word.

And I love NiGHTS. Definitely one of the few games I've probably put over 1000 hours into. Well, if you combined time spent with it and Christmas NiGHTS. :D

The Saturn is all the videogame technology needed - who needs N5, Xbox 2 and PS3 when we have the Saturn?

I want in on this SEGA whore-fest. I don't have the bling to lavish on my Saturn collection like JP, but I love it just the same. 8) In all honesty, NiGHTs did not click with me right away either -- it took me about a year after I purchased it to truly appreciate it.

I really want to get this game.

Is there any text in the game? I was wondering if it makes any difference if I buy the Jpn version or not.

See, that's where you're going wrong. Blue orbs are just a necessary evil - it's all about the gold orbs, dude. Learn that and it'll all come together.

Totally playable in Japanese - practically no text at all.
