I have this Geometry in a brand new Sony, should i worry?

Hello!

I know we shouldn't expect perfect geometry in crt but i was expecting a better condition as this is a brand new device, maybe it doesn't look like much in a photo but personally it bothers me in vertical scroll, Road Fighter for example

Please, follow the vertical red outline on that grid (zoom helps for details), it makes some curves (like a subtle "s") from one end to the other, impossible to soften in the service menu and when finding the defect, we notice the same in the other lines (horizontals too but it's the verticals that worry me the most)

It's a Trinitron 29" flat screen and my biggest doubts are; is this geometry acceptable for a new 29" flat device? Capacitors weaken even without use?

What I want to know is where are you finding brand new CRT TV's from? Were they in an abandoned warehouse or something?

My 29" has a similar bow on the right. You could go into the service menu & adjust the bow or corner pincushion settings to mitigate it a little. Flat screen CRTs are notorious for geometry issues & it's very hard to get them perfect. Yours doesn't look too bad TBH.

Other than that, you can try a yoke adjustment or additional convergence strips but I wouldn't go there unless you know what you're doing.

Caps can dry out over time even without usage, but I doubt replacing the caps will make a difference.

I think if you're unhappy with that geometry out of a consumer set, then CRT's just aren't for you - you might never, ever be happy with them.

And yes, even unused after 20ish years components age in TV's.

@Dreamcazman, about the brand new set, yes, kinda. But i wouldn't call it bow cause bow usually curves once.

@Dochartaigh, it seems that it is acceptable for you and your opinion helps me to accept the problem, actualy my concern is to know if I got a defective device because the amount paid was not cheap and that's why i may have sounded picky on this question but i think you understand me now.

Entirely normal.

Especially with the flats you might allow a little under/over scan to help just hide a little corner/side weirdness.

You may well be able to tweak it out, but you'd want to do a cap check and replace before bothering... And it doesn't look to me that you'd notice this during play. Convergence looks pretty good across the whole screen (again likely to see something towards edge/corners) which is a decent sign the components and setup are probably in as good a state as possible.I would be happy - just tweak the geo now and again when you do the sizes but be surprised if it'd be worth your effort and/or if you can get it better.

Anything else you'd have to go for a curved screen and I'm sure crazy prices... And even then you might be rolling the dice on what condition that was in vs this.

If ocd takes over: then crt unlikely to be the way to go unless you have a lot of time/money and aren't off put by prospect of wasting both! Even 15 years ago I think nearly all of us are with the crt for its unique appeal, not its perfection

The horizontal lines are pinched a bit toward the center of the tube, so I'd look to flatten that out a bit. Trying to create a straight vertical line is hard and I think you've got it as good as it's going to get. Really, the geometry here looks very good and you're lucky you don't have a weird bow on just the bottom horizontal line (for instance).

Also check out the "red push" fix, if you haven't done so already.

That's what can be expected from a 29" Flat screen, being brand new doesnt mean it's gonna be perfect, that's a common misconception.

Geometry looks good to me. With all CRT's even the professional ones you will have some bowing or warping effects in scrolling games, it's usually innate to the tube and not altered by any settings. Some models have it vertically, some horizontally, some both (sometimes can more desirable if the balance is better). It's almost always around the same area you drew the red line on (on the left, right, up, or down), but in some cases can be on the extreme edges which is less desirable in my opinion.

I picked up several brand new FV300's back in the day (around 2015~2016). They all had geometrical and convergence issues to some extent but were still better than most FS models out of the box. With consumer CRT's you just have to open them up and work with some permalloy strips on top of the general service menu settings to get them to look better, but even when right they never really reach 100%. With professional tubes like PVM's and BVM's you can adjust to the same level (or sometimes a little better) without using permalloy strips, but... you won't get rid of the warping effects (feeling of the image rolling over a pencil) as those are just innate, and different people have different levels of sensitivity to them. If it really bothers you then I'd say CRT's might not be the thing for you (hopefully that's not the case).

The best thing about finding new of box, or unused CRT's out of box, is that the parts and tube will have a lot less wear and hopefully age better.

That's excellent geometry for a Wega - much better than normal. These TVs weren't meant to be precision devices and we've all gotten spoiled by the perfect geometry of LCDs over the past couple of decades.

You should increase the overscan so that it hides the edges of the image. It should be close to the red dots, not the outside of the frame. Then the uneven edges won't be visible.
