Racing games with backward (mirror?) mode

Post by guigui »

Definitely a thread belonging to Gheg's gone Rolling Start forum, but I know this community can help me there too.

In racing games, I am always disappointed to find that mirror modes are just ... mirror mode ; with everything is mirrored and that's all. I guess it would be funnier to have to run the tracks backward. Of course it would require developers to rework some parts of the tracks for a backward run to be doable, but it would also be nice to see that some elements designed for regular runs may be used for backward runs.

Do you know any racing games that have actual backward mode ?

Those are commonly referred to as reverse tracks. They're not terribly uncommon, if you Google "[game name] reverse track" you'll probably find Youtube videos of it at least. Many Ridge Racer games have 'em, Outrun 2's home ports have 'em...
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Sorry about the Rolling Start forum indeed. I miss it.
With Battle Gear 2, 3 and 4, you can actually select reverse on every track you race on, no mirror mode though

New Mario Kart 8 tracks have landed recently on the eshop. They are free if you have an NSO+extension pack subscription (which also gives access to F-Zero X and Sin&Punishment), $25 for the whole 48 tracks if not. It also looks like the 8 ones available now are from previous games, and from MK Tour. So no new ones yet ?

Anyway : fun fact is that the "Paris Promenade" track has some branching path around Eiffel Tower and other Paris building, that actually make you run some part of the track backward on different turns. Nice :D

They said when they announced it that all the new DLC courses were going to be remastered versions of tracks from other games. I played basically no Mario Karts between 64 and 8 so it'll all be new to me anyway.

But to tie in to the actual topic, I do remember that in Toad's Turnpike in Mario Kart 64, playing in Mirror Mode had you drive against the traffic instead of with it, which (as I remember it, this was of course forever ago) made it significantly harder. Nothing like that in MK8 Mirror mode, it's just 150cc but flipped.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself
<Despatche> you've been a thorn in the shmups community since the beginning, you're largely responsible for the horrible face of modern speedrunning
