Twinbee vs Fantasy Zone

Post by KimagureMachibuse »

Both the first Twinbee game and Fantasy zone have a few similarities such as both being cute em ups and staring a sentient ship however when it comes to the core gameplay the two differ quite a bit.
Twinbee being more traditional and fantasy zone being much closer to defeneder personally i do prefer fantasy zones gameplay to the first twinbee game.

I would like to here which one you would prefer.

I want to say I like TwinBee more for it's traditional gameplay. I never cared for Defender style games even though I'd absolutely put Fantasy Zone as one of the best in the subgenre.
But I think Twinbee's powerup system sucks. Like really REALLY sucks. I can't -stand- getting powerups in that game. I would probably still rather play Twinbee despite this, but nowhere near as long as other Konami classic STG's.

Yeah, Twinbee's powerup system can take a hike. Bells are handled so much better in the Parodius games - if you were to compare those to Fantasy Zone, the former is a clear winner. But I love Fantasy Zone despite not being much of a Defender fan. I even love it despite it pulling pretty much every single Euroshmup trope. It's a super fun game, and I enjoy it much more than any Twinbee game, despite it also being much, much, much easier.

Fantasy Zone hands down. I don't usually like shop mechanics or time-limited powerups, but FZ is balanced around them and generally an absolute blast to play. Sure, it has traces of Euroshmup, but it was made by people who actually know how to design an arcade game and feels great. TwinBee, on the other hand, I've never been able to get into. Clunky power up system and stage design that never really clicked with me. There's also FZ's soundtrack, which is among my favorites from Sega. IMO, the ending BGM is absolutely beautiful.

Twinbee, if only for the art direction. Though I'd still likely put it below Thunder Cross on my Konami STG tier list. The bells are for men far more patient than me. People like to complain about Gradius Syndrome, but the slap on the ass that game gives you on death is nothing compared to the feeling of dying in Twinbee - like someone putting a cigarette out in your eye.
