Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
Really wanna play espgaluda arrange but everything i've tried so far is really fucking laggy, any suggestions?
Re: Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
With all that money you've saved from not buying those Toaplan collections you could get a better video card.

Try hooking up your PS2 to a CRT. Your fancy new-school TV probably has deinterlacing lag.

Re: Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
Lag isn't -too- bad when I play Psyvariar 2 on PCSX2 on my windows 10 pc. It is there a little bit but I've managed to get to Gluon/TLB despite it. Worse though are the 3D graphical glitches which are a little annoying, sadly.
I have a Windows 10 pc, gtx1660 graphics card (up until recently a gtx970, same performance), i7, 8gb of RAM. I don't know if that mitigates things.
Apparently, and I was told this literally today, PCSX2 devs are in the process of implementing something called "sync to host refresh rate option" which should, allegedly, shave off a little bit of the input lag. So with any luck, a new build of the emulator will come out in the next few months (or less??) and be a little bit better.

In my experience if you really want to play the PS2 games and not have lag, as mentioned before, an actual PS2 on a CRT is your best route for success. I've found most emulators end up either having sound issues, or run pretty bad depending on what games you are playing. if you do try and run the PS2 through a modern TV, it's usually a good bet to turn any of the TV "enhancements" off as they tend to create additional lag.
I ended up just buying a Sony PVM to handle my older consoles and I've never looked back but understandably, that's not always a great/easy fix based on $$$ and/or location and availability. They also take up space so you gotta really want it.
Re: Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
OG hardware or bust in this case, IMO.
Re: Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
I wouldn't get too excited about that. According to DuckStation, which already has this feature .. https://www.duckstation.org/wiki/SettingsEmperorIng wrote:Apparently, and I was told this literally today, PCSX2 devs are in the process of implementing something called "sync to host refresh rate option" which should, allegedly, shave off a little bit of the input lag. So unless you already have VSync enabled, this doesn't appear to do anything special. And I don't see anything about input latency, either.Adjusts DuckStations emulation speed to match the hosts refresh rate when VSync and Audio Resampling settings are enabled resulting in smoothest animations possible. Automatically disables when it is not possible.
Re: Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
I was just testing out the latest PCSX2 Nightly and tried out Espgaluda to see the input lag situation. It's not that bad. Here's some tips:
1. If you have an NVidia GPU, set it to ultra low latency in the control panel. AMD GPUs have a similar setting, but it's called anti-lag.
2. Set PCSX2 to Software Rendering. It's more accurate when you're dealing with 2D games anyway.
3. Try turning off the OSD (on-screen display) in PCSX2.
4. Try disabling VSync in PCSX2 and set PCSX2 to full screen (even if it's not exclusive fullscreen, it might help).
5. Make sure your TV/monitor is set to game mode if it has that feature (duh).
6. Use Windows 10 and make sure your GPU's drivers are up to date. Nobody's testing anything on old OSes or drivers anymore. Sorry, Windows 7 fans.

Re: Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
Since i mainly play 3D games on PCSX2 I presume I should have Hardware Rendering (which is what I currently have). Maybe I'll do some testing... but I can't measure the lag anyhow, ha.
Too bad about that refresh thing. I always have vsync off as a rule anyhow, I don't think vsync has ever improved a shmup, ha.

Re: Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
In actual hardware terms, the final revision of PS2 - SCPH-90000 - is well worth considering as a high quality and mostly portable solution.
It's the ultimate PS2 Slim - they cut the weight significantly to 720 grams AND a multi-voltage AC adapter is now built in, so it's just plug and play. The new design is also, for my money, nicer than the original Slim with its half glossy half matte finish on top.
I haven't really delved into PS2 emulation much at all myself, so I'll be making notes with regard to that.

Software Rendering will probably fix the 3D glitches you're seeing as well. Hardware Rendering has so many more graphical bugs in PCSX2 that I don't know why anyone uses it on most titles.EmperorIng wrote:Since i mainly play 3D games on PCSX2 I presume I should have Hardware Rendering (which is what I currently have). Re: Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
I personally use this one on a modern gaming monitor and it's great. It has a switch for either 4:3 or 16:9 (for those few games that support widescreen) and adds no lag to the experience. Best one I've found on the market and a nice way to bring the PS1/PS2 into the modern age.

Is playing them on a PS2 not "a good way"?

Emulation should be encouraged and supported where able. You also open up more possibilities for recording and sharing games.
For example, there hasn't been footage of a TLB clear of Psyvariar 2 uploaded online for a decade. 10 years! Wouldn't it be nice to have footage of the game that isn't before youtube nuked the video quality of all its older videos? It's hard to be an 'ambassador' for a game if the only stuff you show is ancient blurry messes.

Re: Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
You should probably use a monitor, rather than a TV, since they tend to have way less lag. Then you're probably gonna want to get some kind of
deinterlacer. Probably a Retrotink.
That oughtta work. It won't look as nice as it would on a CRT, but this would be a good setup.
Low lag.

Re: Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
I downloaded the build from GitHub this evening and it eliminated my number one problem with PCSX2 which was the poor frame pacing, all the stutters that even RTSS couldn’t get rid of are completely absent. As for input lag it’s more responsive as you now have exclusive full screen and the option to set the vsync queue to 0 when it used to be 2 by default, it’s a fantastic update.Udderdude wrote:So unless you already have VSync enabled, this doesn't appear to do anything special. Use a PS2. It's literally the best-selling video game console of all time, so I doubt it should be too hard to find one. If you don't want to use a CRT, PS2 + HD Retrovision + RetroTINK 5x Pro looks way better than running PS2 games on a PS3 over HDMI.
Re: Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
If you're plan is to play them on a modern tv then a fast upscaller like an OSSC or RetroTink5x is your best bet.

I still play my PS2 shmups using a CRT with an RGB SCART cable. I have a dedicated 4:3 CRT rotated for using the TATE modes on PS1&2,Saturn,GC etc.

Jailbreak a PS3? Works for me although the fan is REALLY LOUD.

Re: Is there a good way to play PS2 titles
^That's what I do most of the time as well. Ah interesting, I thought my h4x0r PS3 was just jank (as most things don't work on it), and the disc drive had not one, but two DVDs crammed into it when I got it. Happened to be some random season of a show I forgot, and the movie I will never forget that was in there, Emoji Movie. Every time I'd start that thing the disc drive would spin and crank about for about 30 seconds, then it was off to the races. Finally took it apart last year and cleaned it up and opened that bad boy up to retrieve my prizes. But I digress! I wasn't aware of this until you mentioned it, but it looks like you can change the fan settings in WebMan (presumably that's what you use), although it seems like the recommended take-off velocity for efficiency is the default.

Yes, PS2 games requires you to get airborne with the fans cranked, or the console will turn itself off. I prefer my PS2 slim using component out to my plasma, but it's not a convenient option for everyone.drauch wrote:I wasn't aware of this until you mentioned it, but it looks like you can change the fan settings in WebMan (presumably that's what you use), although it seems like the recommended take-off velocity for efficiency is the default.
