Best freeware Doujin shooters

Post by PBMax »

There are so many it's hard to filter the good from the bad.

I know about Cho Ren Sha 68K, Warning Forver and Gunroar.

Any other recommendations?

I'd recommend the "Shanghai Alice" games (Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Perfect Cherry Blossom, Imperishable Night, Phantasmagoria of Flower View, Shoot the Bullet [haven't played the last one, but impressions from others have been good]) and Bike Banditz, for starters.

Those aren't freeware. I recommend checking out ABA games other freeware games like Torus Trooper, Noiz2sa, parsec47, Tumiki Fighters, or rRootage. Radio Zonde (not from ABA games) is also worth checking out.

from here, z-lock and area 2048 are fairly interesting - z-lock in particular. The more enemies get a lock onto you, the more firepower you get.

Also, Every Extend isn't quite a normal shootemup, but heaps of fun anyway... PSP release (Every Extend Extra) by Tetsuya Mizuguchi looks promising.

Warmachine Overload
Urban Uprising

i'd suggest genocide circuit 2. word of warning, there is some pretty "aggressive" hentai in it (although it can be turned off in the options menu).

it is a great game though, and very deep.

for interest, check out the singles tennis match on scoring here. big thanks to tar palantir for the jp replay. it made my score better...

sadly, it hasn't been updated in a while. i haven't seen tar palantir around, i don't have time to dedicate to it (and it seems to need quite a bit of dedication), so i haven't been playing. :(
I have no sig whatsoever.

RefleX and Kamui are also quite interesting, even though the trial versions are only demos. Also Jeff Minter's Gridrunner++

Speaking of Gridrinner, Jeff Minter's website has the original version of the game for c64 and many other games available for free.

Kamui being interesting is an understatement - it's better than a good deal of the Saturn's best shmups I think. Design-wise pretty similar to Rayforce, plays quite a bit like it too, with a dash of Soukyugurentai. Excellent weapons system, and very professional graphics. Runs really well on old hardware too!

Neither Reflex, Gridrunner++, nor Kamui are freeware (though they are worth checking out and have demos, except maybe for Kamui). However, the earlier Gridrunner games are freeware.

Currently, Radio Zonde is one of my favorite shmups and it is 100% free.

It can be found at http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=4291

(note: you must turn off invincibility in the options menu or you'll never lose a life. also, pressing left or right at the stage select menu lets you choose from 6 ships (i was unaware of this when i first started playing!))
