Hello! So i got a brand new CRT monitor this week the person had it boxed up since 2003 lol It's nothing too crazy tho just a 18 inch View Sonic but i think it can be perfect for emulation.
I been messing around in retroarch using all kind of CRT filters and no matter what I can't make it look like my JVC D series mainly because the filters darken the image so much. I tried changing the shader parameters of brightness boosts and such it does get brighter but kinda looks washed out.
Today i found out that you can get fake 240p with a crt monitor and while doing my research i found out that there are a lot of mixed opinions on this, some people said that ''it ruins CRT motion clarity'' others said that ''it looks great'' and others said ''image gets way too dark so just stick to your CRT TV''.
I want to try and judge it for myself. How exactly do you achieve this? Can someone help me? Thanks.
How to get 240p on a CRT monitor?
Re: How to get 240p on a CRT monitor?
With proper input scaling and scanline options, a 31KHz monitor can look identical to a 15KHz one. There is no added blur or motion artifacts, I dont know where you heard that. You will lose a bit of brightness but your monitor should be able to easily compensate for that by turning up the brightness a bit and/or adjusting the scanline darkness %. Forget Retroarch as its too complicated for me to explain here. Try Kega Fusion, set your output to 640x480 and set scanlines to 50% and all filters off. Try your favorite Genesis games. Enjoy.

Just run 240p@120hz/160hz if motion smoothness isnt important to you. 480p@60hz+scanlines is ideal for motion, but darkens the picture too much. Both will look identical so you're gonna to pick your poison with a VGA CRT monitor, unless you want to spend hundreds on a PVM for a no compromises solution.
