Forgotten Worlds - a weird shmup, but a good one?

I am never 100% sure how I feel about Forgotten Worlds. On one hand I really enjoy playing it because its a) a shmup and b) super weird and quirky. But on the other hand I never seem to 100% click with the game. Mostly due to the rotational shooting aspect.
Curious if there are some solid fans of Forgotten Worlds here and I am missing something or if the game is just truly "decent"

I love the game. Played it all the time at a mall arcade when it released.
Then played the Genesis version, which wasn't quite the same, but I enjoyed it. Finally getting Capcom Classics Collection for the Xbox and Capcom Arcade Stadium for Steam with the arcade game emulated.
Still prefer the cabinet's rotary disk-thing, but I can deal with other control schemes. The graphics really amazed me at the time as well. The type of shooter that kept me going to arcades.
If I ever win the lottery I'd get a real Forgotten Worlds cabinet.

The graphics and weirdness are really what hook me in.pablumatic wrote:I love the game. Played it all the time at a mall arcade when it released.

The sci-fi/ancient Egyptian/Japanese/Roman(?) setting is very different and unique. Lots to see and shoot in the game.

While the arcade version with the rotary control is idea, I have a huge soft spot for the Genesis version because other than Altered Beast, it was the first Genesis game I owned. I ended up playing it a ton because like everyone, I beat Altered Beast the first night I had it.
(Nostalgia crap that really has nothing to do with the game itself follows)
I had initially wanted to get Space Harrier II with my Genesis, but for budget purposes, I had to buy the Genesis and game at Kay-Be Toys at the same time, as they were running a "Buy a Genesis, take $10 off any game" sale. At that point, the Genesis only had like 12 games and Kay-Be was sold out of like eight of them, including Space Harrier II. I settled on Forgotten Worlds, but I remember really pestering the Kay-Be employee to make certain that it didn't require a paddle controller since that's how it controlled in the arcade. I don't think she even knew what I meant by "paddle" outside of the realm of ping-pong. So I made her get a manager and everything else.
Hey, I wasn't even driving age. If I wasn't able to play that fucker it could have been months until I was able to get back to Kay-Be to return it

PCE CD port is excellent, and even supports analog controllers for the rotary function. Works quite well with some practice.

That's an awesome story, and I can clearly see it in my mind, b/c I probably went through the same thing!m.sniffles.esq wrote:While the arcade version with the rotary control is idea, I have a huge soft spot for the Genesis version because other than Altered Beast, it was the first Genesis game I owned. I ended up loving the Genesis version, but it was too easy (at least that is what I remember at the time), so now I have a hacked version of the CPS1 PCB that uses the Genesis controls (three buttons with rotate and shoot).
The PCE version works like this great with the three button controller, but honestly, for the best graphics and sound, the hacked arcade one is the way to go, unless of course, you have the push rotators...

I don't remember it being super easy... At any rate, it was tougher than Altered Beast.
My third game was Revenge of Shinobi. You want to talk about tough? Look no further.

It's not a terrible game but i get the idea people are mainly interested in it because of the unobtainium nature of the spinners.
There's a guy on arcade-projects getting ready to make repro spinners, not sure if this was mentioned anywhere here

I had Forgotten Worlds for the Speccy 48k and loved it and when I eventually got a Mega Drive I was blown away by how good Fog Worlds looked
I liked the shop features in older games too.
I was always shit at the Shinobi games. Meh

I quite like it myself. There are a few games that remind me of it but the control system is quite different in F-W and it makes you play differently.
It's pretty decent.
I wouldn't have said that it was quirky or weird or anything like that though as there are Shmups that are far stranger in theme and play style to be found.

I think clicking with Forgotten Worlds mostly relies on figuring out what gear to buy in the shops. Having the right stuff makes all the difference. I wish the OP of the FW high score thread would update it – I've got the #1 score!
