Babby's first arcade test bench setup

Post by MrArgent »

So, I might be finding myself the owner of a Omega Fighter PCB soon. I'm pretty fluent with computer hardware and sort of fluent with consoles, but I've never worked with the guts of a arcade system before. Anything I should know about getting myself a JAMMA test bench setup assembled? I'll need a suitable power supply and a solid converter for use with a VGA display (a NEC MultiSync so 15Khz shouldn't be an issue). Inputs will also be in question.

Also, is a ROM swap all it'd take to bump the game up to Omega Fighter Special?

Which NEC MultiSync do you have/are you planning on getting? There’s only a small few desktop sized ones that support 15kHz, and then some of the massive presentation monitors also support it.

Just get a supergun, a pico psu and whatever controls you will want. Superguns support db9 controller interfaces. if you already own any usb controllers, you can just get something like an undamned converter.

If you're not looking for perfect video quality, something like the gbs-8200 is a good low cost solution for getting rgbs to vga.

If you need speakers, old cheap pc speakers from a thrift store can work or a new $20 pair off amazon.

You'll just need to confirm physical connection compatibility, like the pico psu to the supergun, and interfacing controllers as I mentioned. If you're handy with wiring and soldering, then it should all be pretty easy.

I'm puttin' myself together a minigun setup. Only thing I'm not sure about is the DIN-8 to VGA cable, but that's cheap enough to take a gamble on before I go for something pricy like an upscaler. As for my multisyncs, I've got a 1850E and a 90GX2. They're my workbench displays for working with PCs and stuff that have esoteric needs (odd rates or SoG) like my Sun/SGI workstations - Neither mention 15KHz support on the spec sheet, but I've ran things by a friend of mine who works with PC-98 stuff regularly and it sounds like my odds are pretty good. My plan B's to get an OSSC.

For controls, I'm starting with a AES stick pro - but I think I might try my hand at building my own down the line, especially if I get the Omega Fighter PCB in a bartop like I want to. (I'm limited to what I can solo lift down a flight of stairs with a narrow 90 degree turn, so a full cab would probably be Not Reccomended™. Someday, though...)
