Super Hydorah quiestion about its save system

Hi! I've played and loved the free version Hydorah where you can save up to 5 times per playthrough. So you can use it as a "cumbersome" save-state system. You save at stage 3, for example, and as long as you don't save again, you can keep starting from that point as many times as you want, without redoing the first two.

For those of you who have played Super Hydorah, is there some kind of "practice mode" like that?
I know you can save the game to come back later, but since the game autosaves after each level, I guess the only way to practice a late stage over and over is to die/quit the game before completing it, which is a bummer.

I want to give the "Super" version a go but don't know if it's worth the asking price when you've already played the free version a lot...
