Is this an aperture grille damage problem? Sony PVM rainbow

After looking everywhere I'm guessing this is an aperture grille problem. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

It seems there's no coming back from this damage, right?

From my limited knowledge on CRTs, I would say very possibly. You appear to have good convergence in the crosshatch but the rainbow effect is over it. It doesnt really look like a purity issue either, but you could, if you felt comfortable, try to move the yoke a bit in and out and possibly rotate the rings a bit to see how, if at all, you can affect it. Indeed its probably fucked though.

My money would be on yes. Any issues pertaining to the yoke and convergence/purity ring positions should result in more splotchy discoloration, as far as I know.

What happens if you use a degassing tool on it? It doesn't look like that is the issue, but I'm curious if it has an effect on it.
