Monitor Options

Post by kynrek »

I am new to the Arcade scene so sorry if this is a silly question. I have a Mrs. Pacman / Galaga PCB, a Time Pilot PCB, I may also be picking up an original Galaga. Is there a significant advantage to getting an original monitor to using a VGA monitor and a converter board. I am considering getting a 19" or 25" Wells Gardner K7000 Series monitor. Should I be considering other options? Do I need to stick with the 19"? is it difficult to find a cabinet that will fit 25" vs a 19"? Any tips for a newbie looking at monitor options?

Thanks,

When using a VGA monitor, you wont be able to display 15KHz games without line doubling them, which will add an undesired edge sharpness. You would need something like an OSSC or XRGB mini to add scanlines/signal processing to make it appear more like it was designed.

I hear the WG7000 is a great monitor, I have a 25" one coming in this week so hopefully nothing happens in shipping and I'll get to see for myself.

Without a doubt, a native 15KHz RGB monitor is what you want for the authentic look on those games without the need for scan converters etc.
