Giga Wing DC version

Post by Fighter17 »

I just play the game again thru the emulator after a long time, and I still love it! I know there's a Dreamcast version of it, but my friend told me the graphics on the DC version is a lot worst than the emulator. What do you think?

Less vibrant, but no big deal.

The DC version is somewhat faster than the CPS-II one. Quite a bit of the slowdown from the original doesn't make it into the port.

The default screen size setting will cause a little tearing, but it's fine with an adjustment (IIRC you set the vertical size to -1 or something).
Kinect? KIN NOT.

You can usually get Giga Wing for the DC pretty cheap right now, so get one before they get expensive. This is one of the best games ever made and someday you'll be glad you have a copy.

The music sounds heaps different on the DC, from memory. Maybe it's just the way it's processed? (don't know much about hardware or those formats) I've never played the arcade version, but all the tracks sound completely different on the OST. I guess I have a bias towards the DC version, cuz that's the one I play, but... the last boss theme absolutely has to be DC version. It rocks!

Not that many noticeable differences in the 2 versions.

I think I've read that the soundtracks in this and Mars Matrix were remixed.

The OST on both DC gigawings and Mars Matrix are remixed, yes.

Are there extra planes to choose from in the JP release of Giga Wing? I watched the Retro Core Dreamcast Shooting Special last night, and I thought for certain that there were planes on there that I haven't seen on the US port.

If you 1-cc the DC version (surely the JP one) you will have the ability to play with the stranger (the black plane).

The Stranger is unlockable in the US version as well.

As for the graphics, as Rob said they're similar to the arcade version but a little less vibrant (sort of like the Saturn port of Gunbird, if you've ever played that)...I wouldn't consider it a big deal, but one thing that makes me wince is that the duller colors also make the bullets a bit harder to see in some cases. It's not a huge deal, but I tend to be pickier than most on the issue of bullet visibility...

I forgot about this. Especially annoying in a few places. Might not be much better in the arcade version, though. Some of the bullets are just really small (and not offset with the bg colors).

I tried GW in MAME for the first time last night just for the heck of it, and I found the bullets generally easier to see, though not super-dramatically. Again, though, I'm very picky about bullet visibility; if anyone's not sure, they can just try both for themselves, the DC port is cheap as it is, and MAME is, well, you know. ;)

Agreed. Anyone who enjoys shooters, and has a Dreamcast should have a copy of Giga Wing. Great game at a decent price.

Weren't the story scenes cut from the US release or something? I actually own the Japanese version for some odd reason, though I've never played the arcade version so I can't compare it. All I can say is looks aren't its best quality.

Dunno about the Coin-op/Mame release, but I find the boss on the lava stage a nightmare due to the blue bullets and red background. Have real trouble seeing those and it kills the game for me somewhat. I don't mind dying cause I suck, but because I'm squinting to see bullets gets my goat.

The between-level story things are still there. I forget if there's an option to turn 'em off like there was in GW2 though...in any event, you can skip past 'em with the Start button anyways.

It is not like the Saturn port of Gunbird, but more like Shienryu YOKO mode on the Saturn.

the entire screen is scaled, but not scaled like in emulators, but in an ugly way.

Hard to describe, buy only if you can get it for cheap.

Scaled?
Gigawing was a Verticontal (4:3 vertical shmup) from the begining ;).

The screen has scaling artifacts because the DC's resolution (640x480?) is not an integer multiple of the PCB's resolution (384x224) All the other CPS2-to-DC ports have the same problem, but it's far less visible in a fighting game than in a shooting game where the screen continuously scrolls in one direction.

There is an adjustment to have the game displayed w/o scaling. I don't remember what the trick is, but I'm sure somebody else here know's... or maybe that was for Mars Matrix...

You can adjust it to have no rippling but it's still going to be upscaled, as with all CPSII --> DC ports.

I think CPSII GW had better explosion SFX too. Haven't done a comparison in awhile.

But it's $5 for the DC port or $100+ for the B-board. Non-gameplay nitpicks ain't worth $95 to me.

Here you go. The thread is still there, the URL just points to the forum's old location.

A few questions regarding the CPS2 version of Gigawing:

1.) How many digits can be scored with the CPS2 version of Gigawing?

2.) What is the World Record for CPS2 GW and by whom achieved it?

3.) Are there any Superplay VHS or DVDs of CPS2 GW available?

Thanks for the informative answers as always, fellow shmuppers... ^_~

I believe super-play.co.uk has a very high scoring run by a famous Japanese player. Unfortunately, it's with the ship I hate.

There are two: Carmine and Widerstand. I got them from the same DVD; I can't remember if they're current WR runs or not

I remember when I played the DC version a lot I could never get past Stage 6. Then when I finally got the chance to play on an arcade machine again, I 1CC'ed it within a couple tries. The lack of slowdown in the DC version makes a HUGE difference.
