Scaler for Atari 600XL /w DVI output

Post by jowi »

I've been pointed at this forum by someone from AVSForum, where i asked this as well :) maybe you can help me.

I've recently bought an Atari 600XL. I've had this as a child, 36 years ago. I've been reading up to differenet forums about modification etc. Amazing how great the community around these old 8 bitters are! So i've bought a video mod for the PAL 600XL that adds a DVI output using a daughter board, with a 1280x960@50hz resolution. The problem is... my Acer S243 monitor and my Pioneer Kuro (Elite, KRP-600M) can not handle it properly... the image is placed on the upper left corner of the screen, with both panels.

On the Pioneer Kuro:

On the Acer monitor it is almost the same. Now, the developer of the board (from Poland) told me to get a (2nd hand) HP LP2465 monitor, which would display the output correctly, and... it does:

But... i would really like to have the image displayed correctly on my Acer, and even better, the 60" Pioneer... also on my JVC-X7500 projector on a 120" screen :)
The developer of the board says he can't change anything, the signal is ok, it's the fault of the displays being used. I doubt that if i'm honest...

According to the developer, the specs of the signal are:

Code: Select all

Main parameters of the Sophia's DVI 1280x960 resolution on the PAL system are:

Horizontal pixels = 1280
Vertical pixels = 960
Horizontal frequency = 62.2kHz
Vertical frequency = 49.86Hz
Pixel clock = 113.5MHz
Horizontal polarity = negative
Vertical polarity = negative
Scan type = noninterlaced

Horizontal total time = 1824 pixels
Horizontal address time = 1280 pixels
Horizontal front porch = 112 pixels
Horizontal sync time = 160 pixels
Horizontal back porch = 272 pixels

Vertical total time = 1248 lines
Vertical address time = 960 lines
Vertical front porch = 3 lines
Vertical sync time = 3 lines
Vertical back porch = 282 lines
And now to get to the actual question :) i'm thinking of buying a scaler, as cheap as possible. I'm looking for a cheap DVDO VP50 or a bit older Lumagen Vision HDP, which can be found for less. I'm thinking that if i can adjust the timing and h/v front- backporches etc. i should be able to 'tame' this signal into submission and have it outputted in a correct way so that i can feed it to my Pioneer Kuro and/or my JVC-X7500 4K projector?

Or maybe there are other options? Other scalers, solutions? Are the timings of the signal even correct?
