Voltage meter reads ~12v

I'm using the following harness with my Sigma Hakuryu:

The voltage meter was around 12v out of the box and I was expecting it to read 5v but it won't adjust below about 10.5v and when it's that low the video output is scrambled. So I guess that meter should read 12.0v?

BTW has anyone found an easier way to adjust the voltage on a Hakuryu than inserting a little screwdriver into that slot? It's not a lot of fun.

Your turning the 12v line down to 6v and that means the 5v line will be less than 2v lol.


Does the voltmeter switch lines when you press that little button?

The little button actually brings up the service menu and the little switch just switches the readout off and on.

So it sounds like I want to keep the readout at 12v.

BTW how close is close enough? Switching motherboards seems to necessitate adjusting the voltage if I want it right at 5.00v and adjusting the voltage on the Sigma Hakuryu is a major PITA.

Plug in the game system that draws the most power you will notice 5v lowers under load.

Tune it to 5v under load and that should be fine for everything else.

Most of the time these psu are built with 5v higher than 12 because of the expected load.

It sounds like above 5v is ok but below 5v is not?

Overvoltage is worse than undervoltage. Overvoltage fries things. Undervoltage may have things malfunctioning or not running at all, but wont damage.

I guess the various boards are close enough that 5v at the biggest draw is ok for all of them. At what point is overvoltage dangerous to the board?

On a CPS1 board when I get 5.00v I also get 12.4v. Is 12.4 too high?

On a Gunbird 2 I get 5.13v and 11.3v. Normal?

That's about what I get with my CPS2 boards also. 5V is the biggest concern, don't want to go too high with that. I would say 5.13V is too high, although somebody may know better, specifically for gunbird. But CPS2 and most boards, 5.1V at the chips is the absolute max you want to leave it at. 12V on CPS2 I believe only runs the fan. Here again, somebody may know better. That's why you'll hear the fan speed incresase/decrease with adjustments. But I've never had a problem with 12V higher, as long as 5V doesn't deviate more than +.1V.

Since changing the voltage on the Hakuryu is such a hassle (mainly the difficulty of feeling your way to the plastic screwhead after sticking a screwdriver in the very small hole somewhat in front of it) then maybe I should set it to run something with a big draw like CPS1 a little under 5v in order to keep Gunbird 2 under 5.1v.
