Arcade audio and cabinet constraints
I was thinking about adding a subwoofer to the little desktop sound system I use for arcade board audio but then I realized arcade cabinets from the 90s probably used only small speakers. Was there a typical speaker size? Does arcade audio from that time even have much in the way of low frequencies?

Try listening to the soundtracks in MAME or on Youtube with a nice pair of headphones or full range speakers. Adding a sub woofer to your arcade setup is in my opinion absolutely necessary. Also, for shmups, explosions are way cooler with a sub.
