Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
Hi - I just bought a Commodore 1084s-D1 monitor - I think it does but does anyone know if supports the kind of RGB we need for 15Khz consoles? It's a UK model and I want to run NTSC games on it.
Also, does anyone know where to buy a quality RGB to female scart cable for this (I'm in the UK).
Cheers.

Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
yes, it will work just fine with your consoles' RGB output.
I think your D1 has a female DB9 RGB input, is that right ? Unfortunately there have been many different 1084 variants. Here's an adapter cable for the version with a MALE connector on the monitor's end, but I guess it would work with a gender changer in between. Maybe check the pinouts before ordering...

I had to use a sync stripper for my D1. It required TTL level sync so I just fit one in a scart adapter.

Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
Thanks - I have one - a sync strike from Arcadeforge. Do you mean that the monitor needs TTL level sync? In that case, would the Arcadeforge be able to supply TTL level sync the monitor needs?

Sorry Fudoh, for some reason your post hadn't shown up when I answered Syntax. That's right, it's got the female DB9 input. Thanks for the link!Fudoh wrote:yes, it will work just fine with your consoles' RGB output.

Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
So sorry for the *tripple* post guys, but I realised that the situation is slightly different as I'm using a sync strike. So as the sync strike outputs 15khz via female VGA socket (D-sub 15), would I just need to get a standard male D-sub 9 to male D-sub 15 cable or would the cable need to be wired a specific or non-usual way?
Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
what's your idea of a standard DB15 to DB9 adapter pinout ?

Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
I'm not very knowledgable on this kind of thing - I just assumed there'd be a way it's normally done but I suppose it's probably not a very commonly used cable..Fudoh wrote:what's your idea of a standard DB15 to DB9 adapter pinout ?
Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
A standard adapter should work with the Commodore monitor, but if you have sync issues you'll have to buffer it somehow.

Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
Thanks for the info guys.
So if I plan to use my sync strike, the output will be from a 15 pin D-sub (VGA style) port. Can I just get a 15 pin to 9 pin cable like this to connect the sync strike to the monitor?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/21cm-Cable-1 ... SwO~VaVfnD
Or this:

Unless you find out which standard these adapters are following, nobody will be able to answer your question.

Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
Thanks Fudoh, I've done some research and I can't see any cables designed specifically for this hookup. In fact it seems that if you want to use a sync stripper, you have to make up (or get someone to make up) a custom 15 pin to 9 pin cable. Heres the pinout:
https://gamesx.com/hwb/co_C1084dd.html
And someone's experience making up a cable:
http://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/in ... opic=127.0
Anyway I'm just looking at this route as an alternative if sync doesn't work with the cable in the link you posted. For some reason it works for some people and not others.
That cable is the only one I've seen designed for this that I can find - I've ordered it on the hope that sync won't be a problem.
Would I be right to say that the analogue/TTL switch on the back should be set to analogue (pushed in)?

yes, the other position is for CGA output from early IBM machines.Would I be right to say that the analogue/TTL switch on the back should be set to analogue (pushed in)?

Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
Nice one - the RGB cable won't arrive for a few days so I'm stuck with composite for the moment. I'll reserve my judgement until then, but even so I can't help suspecting that this monitor's a touch softer than I expected. I guess that's the trade off for eliminating scan lines. I'll know more on Friday, but this might be a good use for the Borti's deblur feature.
On a larger screen i don't like the deblur look but I'm wondering if it'll look nicer and less obviously pixelated on a softer 14" shadow mask..

Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
Apologies for harping on - this never worked for me. I tried the first cable and then the Sync strike with the adapter above. I sometimes saw part of the image flickering but then just rolling lines of colour. I have the N64 wired for C-sync, that should work shouldn't it?
Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
How you dealing with the connector gender issue ?

I bought a basic gender changer:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01 ... UTF8&psc=1
Is this one OK?

Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
It says "Converts Straight Cable to Null Modem", so it crosses the lines and changes the pinout. You need a straight gender changer instead, IF (!) you can confirm that the pinout on both 1084 versions is the same.
Nullmodem cable or adapter (like yours):

Thanks Fudoh, very much appreciated. So am I right in saying that, assuming the pinout on both 1084 versions is the same, this one should do the job?

Check the adapter you have.
Vga to 1084s
Red 1 - 3
Green 2 - 4
Blue 3 - 5
Sync 13 -7
Maybe the sync strike only outputs 75r sync?

Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
Thanks for that Syntax - I've had a look at the original Sync strike Shmups thread made by the creators and also the website but can't see details of the pinout for the VGA output:
http://arcadeforge.net/Scaler-and-Strik ... e::15.html
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=37285&p=698815#p698815
If I'm not mistaken, I think I'll need to contact Arcadeforge and get the right pinout for their VGA output and go from there. Then I can check my 15 pin to 9 pin adapter configuration and make sure the replacement gender changer I mentioned in my last post is direct (I think it is).
Having looked back at this thread I note you mentioned that your D1 required TTL sync. Maybe that's my main problem - I don't know how I'd get TTL level sync from my setup. Also, I just saw a chart of the digital and analogue modes and it seems that the analogue RGB input uses composite sync whereas all my N64s are wired for C-sync. perhaps this is a non-starter!

Re: Commodore 1084s-D1 - RGB cables?
Took a quick look at the sync strike for you. It strips sync with a LM1881 which produces the TTL you want, but then passes it through a 680R resistor (R2) to bring the sync levels down to normal.
If you remove R2 and bridge the pads OR add a switch from one side of R2 to the other side of R2 which will bypass it and allow TTL.

Thank you so much for taking the time to look into it - I'll have a look & add a switch in case I need normal sync in the future :)

Happy to help dude, really keen to see some happy snaps of your monitor that puts PVMs to shame

I really need a couple of these... Or a decent alternative!

Didn't work for my monitor - it didn't have the right configuration. I'll have another bash at it one day.

I was going through a busy period so I left it. I'll pick it up again at some point..
