Reasons to Keep a PAL Compatible CRT in the US?

Post by FiZiX »

Hello! This is my first post in the Shmups forum so I hope I'm not retreading old ground. I have a dilemma in which I hope the knowledgeable members here can help me solve. To preface my question, I need to tell you that I'm a retro gamer living in the US and I currently own the following hardware:
  • Die Hard arcade machine (with an original XBOX installed for emulation)
  • SNES 1-CHIP w/c-sync SCART cable (no mods)
  • SD2SNES flash Cart
  • Sega Genesis Model 1 w/c-sync SCART cable (no mods)
  • MD Everdrive flash cart
  • Shinybow SB-2840 (for SCART RGB to component)
  • Sony KV-24FS100 CRT TV
  • Philips (Bosch) LTC 2821/90 color video monitor (specs)
The last item in the list is the cause of my dilemma. I'm short on space and I was considering selling the Philips monitor because I'm happy with my Sony TV now that I've got it well calibrated. However, the one thing the Philips monitor supports that my Sony does not is PAL video signals. So I would like to ask the group:

Can you think of some reason I may want to have a PAL capable monitor now or in the future?

I doubt I'd be fortunate enough to own a Super Famicom or Mega Drive but is there some reason I'd want to connect one my NTSC consoles to a PAL TV set? Are there some killer games I'd be missing out on if I didn't have a PAL monitor available? If so, would these or other consoles need to be specifically modded to output PAL and would it be worth the hassle?

Thanks in advance for your valuable input!

For console use? No. You absolutely don't need a PAL display for that.

Only reason I can see, is if you're interested in exploring the library of the Commodore 64 and the Amiga. Lots of games for those were never released in North America, so you'll have to import the PAL release. Which is why it's a good idea to have a PAL version of those computers(or a modded one that can switch it's region setting) and a PAL crt to display them (and a step-up converter to go from 120v to 230v).

Same applies to other computers that send out a 15kHz video signal and that have more games released in PAL land than here.

For me it would be to play the few Europe Exlusive or Japan/Europe Exclusive titles out there, quite a few PS2 games only came out in Japan and Europe, 3-4 Wii titles only came out in Japan and Europe, that kinda stuff.
