Playing Game Gear games through 32X

Post by WestRGB »

I’ve been trying to brainstorm a way to play Game Gear games on a TV with original hardware, and without cutting plastic. From what I understand, the primary issue with playing GG games on an SMS or Genesis is that they can’t handle the GG colour pallette. But what about through the 32X?

I’ve read that the power base converter doesn’t work through the 32X, nor do SMS games on an everdrive (please correct me if I’m wrong). What is preventing these games from playing? Is it an issue that can be overcome through software?

Any info/suggestions would be welcome.

My understanding is that the 32X blocks/intercepts signals that are meant for SMS games which is why they do not work. There are some mods around that allow SMS playback through the 32X, but I sincerely doubt they will provide access to the 32X colour palette. Bear in mind that GG games work on a Mega Drive by essentially being converted to SMS games, it is a big stretch for the Mega Drive in SMS mode to have access to any 32X functionality. I think the best you could hope for from a 32X is a GG emulator that takes full advantage of the colour palette, which has been discussed previously (but never released afaik), it would still be an emulator at heart however.

RGB modding a game gear is really the only viable solution, at least for the short term.

theres a guy here who builds consolized game gears. its perfect for what you need.

there is a thread here about it.

oh and theres also Viletims GGTV game gear tv output board. Not quite a consolized system, but it still allows you to play game gear games on the tv, on the original console.

McWill's Game Gear screen upgrades also come with a TV/VGA output option, that would involve cutting plastic though (same as Tim's board).
