DVDO iScan VP30 firmware request

Post by Xaranar »

Hey all

I'm wondering if anyone has access to older firmware revisions for the VP30, as my monitor does not play nice with the latest 1.14 release unfortunately. I've tried it on a different TV and it works fine, just for some reason, my monitor will not accept the output from the latest firmware version.

Much appreciated.

I don't have an older firmware but a workaround is to set the output resolution to 1918x1080. If you see a picture and have 1 column of black pixels on either side it works.

Okay, thanks. I’ll give that a go. I didn’t know you could set a custom resolution on the VP30.

IIRC they can go up to 1920x1200, and the older iScan HD/+ can be used as a downscaler for 240p, so yeah they're quite flexible.

I've had the same issue on one TV, did the 1918 trick and it worked, but later I've switched cables (used a better quality HDMI) or touched something else without paying attention, and full 1920x1080 worked flawlessly.
Maybe changing the PSU around the same time could be another explanation; know that an aging SinPro will negatively affect the overall stability and compatibility of the DVDO machines.

Personally I wouldn't recommend firmware downgrading, I've experienced both the VP30 and VP50Pro with obsolete firmwares for a while each, and I've encountered a number of really annoying issues in all areas; quality, compatibility and stability, also firmware functionality.
Practically all fixed after upgrading to the final versions.

I actually managed to downgrade via the magic of the wayback machine, and it works on version 1.10. I say works, I actually get a picture, but no sound unfortunately, no idea what that's about. The 1918 trick yielded no results for me. Going to try fiddling around with it a bit, see what happens, maybe try a different PSU.

Have you got sound out of it on any monitor? You have to set the sound input in the input menu I think. If your sound is going in through 2 rca cables set the input to stereo.

Sound input mixing/sync too can have issues if the HDMI cable and/or PSU aren't good BTW.
Though I have experienced this more on the VP50pro that demands even more power and steadier than the VP30.

There's a number of things you could check like HDCP, sync type, make sure your output is locked (60Hz lock should be the one), make sure film/vcr modes are off etc if you haven't yet (some settings and features turn themselves on automatically by accident on detection of certain signals)
But since you have downgraded the firmware your machine is now behaving somewhat differently from the commonly final firmware-equipped VP30's, not much I can add there.

Just a small update, I got my hands on a third party power supply, actually meant for a VP50 which, as you say, draws more power than the VP30, but having the same connector size and the same voltage. I'm hoping the extra headroom of 6 amps as opposed to 5 on the VP30 will make some sort of difference, I will find out this evening.

I seem to remember on my VP30 one version of firmware had sound issues. I resolved it by playing with the A/V lip sync setting. I was doing analog sound -> hdmi. Try setting the a/v sync value all the way negative.

I don't think it actually messed with the sound timing, it just made it so there was sound again.

So, the new power supply made no difference at all. What did help, however, was changing the horizontal resolution to 1919, weirdly. I think I’m going to sell it on, though, as it doesn’t process a 1080p signal like the VP50 does, and I have a Crestron that already does that, and does it blisteringly fast.
