Crestron HD-Scaler firmware request

Post by Xaranar »

So after my success in finding someone with access to the Extron firmware in my previous post, I now find myself in a similar position, only with a scaler by Crestron. I am wondering if anyone on the off chance has access to the latest firmware for the Crestron HD-Scaler; it's a rather old model as it is discontinued, but it is the only piece of equipment I have that will actually cope with the output from the OSSC without quibbles. Much appreciated all, thanks in advance.

https://www.crestron.com/account/register <- apparently they only require an email account and password to register.

On an unrelated note - I've tested out many VPs/upscalers in the last couple of months (by Gefen, Kramer, Tvone, CYP) and it just so happens that you own the last two I'd like to try out (there was an eBay listing for the HD-scaler closing today, but I didn't make an offer since it lacked the remote, without which this VP is apparently useless). How are they like? Are you looking for newer fw versions because of some major issue you've bumped into?

I did register an account with them, but you can't access the software section without a customer number unfortunately.

I don't have a remote for the Crestron scaler so I can't access any of the functions, but I do have one on order so I'll be able to do so once it arrives. As I said, it handles the OSSC's output, all the way up to line 5x mode without a hitch, which is more than can be said for many displays/scalers. I haven't tested it with RGB, as it takes a signal over 15 pin D-Sub, and I don't have a spare connector/cable to rewire to output RGBs. The Extron is much more fully featured, has many controls when it comes to adjusting picture height and width, position, aspect ratio etc. It is able to embed audio from an external source into its HDMI output as well, if that's something you're looking for. It scales 480p content much better than the Framemeister does, which is mainly what I use it for - I have my HDMI modded Wii connected to it, as my monitor has no aspect ratio control on it and will always display the Wii's 720x480 resolution as 4:3, but the Extron does a great job of handling that. It has a relatively fast framebuffer as well, in my tests it only adds a single frame of lag, which is barely noticeable to me. I'd definitely recommend both of them, and considering you can pick them up relatively cheaply on eBay due to companies getting rid of them, it's a no brainer. I've completely replaced my Framemeister with an OSSC + HDMI scaler solution, and I'm glad I did.

Hope that helps.

Thanks! The Extron DSC does look promising. The lack of picture size controls and lousy/non-functional AR pre-sets on many of these VPs often make them practically useless (due to the varying, and generally non-square pixel AR that characterizes pre-HD games, which tends to not be taken into account).

Sorry for not being helpful - going by what's written in the HD-scaler manual (page 18) one would think that registering is all it'd take to have access to the software. :( Good to know that you didn't find any major shortcoming though (as of yet). More often than not, fw updates are released to address glitches/bugs - if you don't notice any, updating is not strictly necessary I guess.

the Extron would have been perfect for me, If it didnt try to deinterlace 240p, because it doesnt do it right.

It has combing with 240p.

but now im wondering if they fixed that with a firmware update or at least, gave you the option of turning it off now.

I’ve not tried it with 240p, I have the OSSC to do that for me, only the OSSC’s output is rather funky, and it’s a lottery whether it will be accepted by whatever device it is connected to. Weirdly enough, the Extron will accept a signal from the OSSC when connected to my Mega Drive, as the console’s 59.91Hz refresh rate is close enough to the NTSC standard 59.94Hz. Connected to my SNES, though, it doesn’t like it at all and flickers and jitters all over the place, most likely due to the SNES’s more out of spec 60.08Hz refresh rate.

Hi there!

I just bought a Crestron 8x8RGBHV and attempted to download the latest firmware, without realizing you need an account. Would you be able to grab this firmware for me?

I've grabbed the links you provided above--thanks!

Hello friend, do you still have access to the necessary files for the crestron scaler HD update? I would be grateful if you could re-share the files to update. I have some problems with this scaler and I believe it could be solved after updating.
