When playing through my PAL copy of Empire of Steel I didn't notice much slowdown. Some hitching here and there and some during the biggest explosions, but nothing early-SNES-days like.
Recently, I added a language/Hz switch to my MD. When playing my PAL cartridge @ 60Hz the PAL borders disappear but I notice a lot of additional slowdown. The final boss fight is like 85% half-speed. Terrible. I thought, maybe it's because I'm using a PAL cartridge and this game is just glitchy this way when forced to 60Hz.
Today I put an NTSC US ROM of Steel Empire on my Everdrive to try if it works better @ 60Hz than my PAL cartridge. Same result. Tons of slow down @ 60Hz, PAL borders and fairly smooth @ 50Hz.
Is the NTSCT/US version of Steel Empire really that slow? Is maybe my modded MD at fault? I know that till I replace my master clock crystal it outputs an off-spec video signal, maybe the CPU also runs slightly slower, causing it to miss the v-sync more frequently and hence slowing down?
Thanks
