Need advice re: TG16 RGB mod a/v jack
I picked up a TG16 as part of a lot recently and after some trials and tribulations, I have discovered that it is functional, though the RF out is pretty much shot. Wired up a janky composite cable just to make sure that was all that is wrong with it and, sure enough, seems the rest of the system is fine. The next step, obviously, is to get RGB out of it, but, being a US system, I don't have a handy port to wire a mod to. The simple solution is the dB Booster, but I have read that it has some compatibility issues with superg's switch (which I plan on getting eventually) and, ultimately, doesn't work if I eventually add a CD unit to the back. It's also quite a bit more expensive. So I have decided to go with Voultar's mod instead, but I'm not sure what the best way is to actually install a jack to hook a SCART cable up to. The dB Booster uses a Genesis 2 jack, which seems fine except that I would need to figure out where to get one from. I have a left over jack I never used from my NESRGB kit, which, I think, is the same as the one on the Framemeister, but I suspect that will be difficult to find cables for and I don't intend on hooking it up to the Framemeister. I think I will probably remove the RF unit completely and just use that hole for the new jack, just curious what people suggest given the availability of cables. Thanks!

Keep in mind that the DuoRGB board will work just fine to drive the video, but there's nothing to drive the pseudo line-level stereo audio. You can tap the left and right channels, but it's not going to be particularly "loud" as their gain is low. I have a few things on paper to address this specifically for OG white PC-E systems as well as the TG16, but nothing's available, currently.thebigcheese wrote:I picked up a TG16 as part of a lot recently and after some trials and tribulations, I have discovered that it is functional, though the RF out is pretty much shot. I'd recommend Tim Worthington's A/V driver for your TG-16. Not only does it output proper video amplitude, but it has a stereo op-amp on-board to properly drive your audio.

Shoot! Didn't even realize that, my order is already placedVoultar wrote:Keep in mind that the DuoRGB board will work just fine to drive the video, but there's nothing to drive the pseudo line-level stereo audio. On a related note, if anyone has any ideas for a simple stereo preamp circuit for the audio lines, I'd appreciate it. Got lots of random parts lying around, so I'm sure I can put something together, just not finding much by Googling. Also looking to find a good source for the DIN sockets.

Theres a kit at http://www.lowbudgetify.com/turbografx- ... e-rgb.html that comes with everything you need. Rgb board, And Genesis 2 connector. its also one of the easiest to install.

Hmmmmm. Out of stock, but it's got the audio outs and a connector. Looks like a decent one to get. Maybe I am just misunderstanding, though, but it looks like the audio circuit is just a capacitor for each channel. Not sure how that amplifies the signal, maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong. Seems like all that would do is filter some frequencies.mvsfan wrote:Theres a kit at http://www.lowbudgetify.com/turbografx- ... e-rgb.html that comes with everything you need. Or you could buy an RGB modded NEC Tennokoe 2 unit and hook up either the composite video or use the mini DB-8 interface for RGB output. Uses Euro Scart cable setup. Fellow shmupper mickris sells one for use on the PC Engine/Core Grafx 1 & 2/TurboGrafx-16 consoles. He's selling one for $75.00. Plus it has the built-in ability to save your PC Engine & TurboGrafx-16 game saves as well with the on-board back-up battery (includes saving of all the TG-16 Soldier Blade shmup's high scores and high score initials for posterity -- how cool is that?). This is a fine & cheaper alternative rather than trying to find the more expensive and rare-as-heck elusive TurboGrafx-16 Booster Plus add-on unit (with built-in memory saving functionality for games that have game saving ability from the get-go) that goes for a pretty penny these days for use with the barebones TG-16 console. Of course, NEC sold a plain vanilla Turbo Booster (non Plus version) add-on unit that allowed the TG-16 to have a pre-amp + outputs for both RCA composite video and the obligatory L & R RCA phono outputs as well but no game saving functionality whatsoever.
Here's an eBay auction for a rare but barebones NEC Turbo Booster Plus variant with TG-16 game saving functionality: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Turbo-Booster-P ... SwGzxZgoFz
Here's mickris' sales thread with the Tennokoe 2 RGB mod: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=53517
It's truly plug 'n' play RGB mod at it's best. I bought one for myself sometime back & it works like a charm indeed with my PC Engine Core Grafx 2 console setup.
