Necromunda

Post by MintyTheCat »

Hello all,
I remember it from back in the 90s but never got around to playing it. It looks pretty cool though and I like aspect of building a gang and each member having experienced gained over campaigns.

It is said be released in November the updated version:

https://www.warhammer-community.com/201 ... ge-post-2/

Did any of you play it yourselves? I have played a lot of Space-Hulk over the years but never got into this but I may well get a copy and start playing.

Cheers.

I painted up an Escher gang when I was about 18 but never got around to playing. Smaller skirmish games like this are probably the way forward now that citadel miniatures are about $100 each. Hope GW lose that price-fixing lawsuit

Edit: the old edition had a multi-level board you could build up to create a more interesting looking hive city. The new board looks hella-lame.

I tried out Necromunda in the 90s and still have the terrain set. Honestly though, the rules dip too deep in the usual GW wargame rule tropes for me to enjoy it. There are other skirmish rule sets that better suit my tastes, so I'll be passing on the new game. I will likely pick up a few models though, for use in other rules.

Space Hulk is definitely an exception when it comes to GW though. That game is awesome and quite well designed, which is very hard to do in a game this asymmetrical.

Yes, I agree, GW are most of the time just too pricey. The issue that I have is that they are more into selling miniatures than developing decent rules for their games. We actually play with first edition Space-Hulk rules with a few changes. Worst-case I will simply use the older Necromunda rules or have a look at the community rules set.
Definitely give Space-Hulk a go if you like smaller but well done games. We use miniatures from the current offerings but use the tiles from the second edition. I have pretty much all the campaigns, rules, tiles that were released for first and second edition. I still have a boxed and never opened copy of the third edition from 2009 but since we never wanted to use the tiles or the Genestealers from that edition we just carried on using the older tiles. If you have a look around you can find the tiles for not too much cash too and then get your own models. To be honest you can use pretty much any models in place of the expensive GW ones.

I need to see how over the top the rules are going to be. I quite like SH for being a nice balance rules wise between being interesting and still easy to apply quickly.
I have Level 7: Omega Protocol but what other skirmish games have you tried?
Yes, I am hoping that they will release that gang from the house of religious nutters - the ones that look like the KKK :D
I agree, it is a bit poor that they are not including any terrain. I will need to look around for terrain and see if it is all doable cost wise.

Yes, I've played SH with a few different people over the years and we all enjoyed playing it. You don't need many miniatures to play it and perhaps this is why GW will not support it properly as they only make cash when people keep on pouring money in for new miniatures. Take the new Space Marines for example, they are almost exactly the same as the other ones and yet they are most expensive. This cna only appeal to the 'gotta have them all' kind of mentality with way too much cash. I will never play the full 40K game for this reason alone.

Thanks for your comments, chaps.

For skirmish level scifi, I'm currently checking out Rogue Stars. It's most notable for some interesting ideas with the turn sequence, and works fine with a handful of gang members using mostly small arms. I did a "galactic scum doing heists and dealing with planetary cops" thing with Rogue Stars, using minis from Human Interface for the cops.

For mass battle scifi, I'm currently most excited for Polyversal which I was in the beta for a few months ago. That game does pretty much everything the way I like it and I'm really looking forward to the full release.

I'm also working on stuff for CAV: Strike Operations (mech game with combined arms) for Reapercon next month. That game is a bit tougher to recommend, as it is very heavy on keywords that are not easy to reference. I ended up making my own index and glossary (no joke). I prefer the older CAV first edition.

Hi,

yes, I have seen that published - Osprey - come up with a few titles that got me interested. I have not managed to grab any as yet though. The Steampunk one and War of the Worlds ones got my interest.
I will look at the rules for Rogue Stars.

Polyversal - looks very good! I would love to play a small scaled game with lots of action. Me and friend were looking at playing OGRE some more and there is the Land Iron Clads game that looks decent. I have been getting hold of terrain pieces. I would prefer to play large scale wargames using smaller scale miniatures. I also began converting some War of the Worlds rules for small scale miniature use about a month ago.

I will keep my eye on the release of Polyversal.

I have played Battletech as a mech game but not seen CAV as yet.

Thanks for letting us know about these games ;)

I have played quite a bit of Space-Hulk but it's a 'flat' space so there is no firing at angles above and below. I quite fancy getting into Necromunda. I will have to see how much the new boxed game will be to see if it is kind of worth getting but I dare say the rule book will be available seperately. There is also the community rulebooks that are still widely used too in case the new Game Workshop rules are not up to scratch - you never know.

I fancy playing that gang of religious nutjobs that look like the KKK and have all the flame throwers :)

Are you planning on getting the new release yourself?

I need to get some scenery built and painted and have been looking at some options.

Haven't played a table top game in like 20 years at this point. No plans to get back into it, the people I played with I haven't spoken to in 20 years, and I dont really have time for another hobby these days. Still, lots of good times back in the day playing it. My one buddy worked at Games Workshop at the time, so we had it all. Huge proper 4x8 table with scenery and shit, ALL of the 40K stuff, all the armies. It was kind of crazy. I preferred Necromunda as it was smaller scale, shorter games, etc. I honestly have zero recollection of rules or anything. Before the table top stuff all we really played was Shadowrun, but again, no recollection on rules or anything at this point, its been sooooo long.

I kind of went the other way: I prefer playing slower games these days when I am not playing Shmups. I find the more gentlemanly, slow pace with time to assess the options sort of relaxing.
The games that I tend to play are trade off games.
I agree, one can have far too many hobbies :) We tend to play SH a handful of times a year but we always have a lot of fun with it. The pieces that we use take time to build and paint. Planning campaigns, coming up with missions, sourcing missions and such takes time too - it is all part of it really and it takes on many facets of gaming.

I am the same: I will not play 40K and I disagree with the prices that they charge. Also, if I want a large scale wargame I do not want to be using 25,28mm scale models.

I prefer the smaller skirmish games for 25-28mm models. Necromunda looks like a lot of fun and the idea that your characters in your team have a history and change over time is kind of interesting. You could imagine campaigns potentially going on for years and each team member having their ow story and state. Some pick up injuries for example - I like that :)

I tend to remember the rules for games but I find myself trying to work out 'which one' to apply it to :D It gets even more involved when you know several editions of the rules and get confused which applies to what. When we place SH we bascially use first edition rules but we have added some of the new changes that came with third edition such as being able to use Guard which is a bit like using Overwatch but allows the character to do better in melee combat and you cannot 'jam' either :)

Then there is finding people to play with. Many game systems people hardly play these days. If you want to play 40K you could play all day, every day in many parts of the world but some of the lesser known games it is often harder to find people. If I walked into a GW shop and said "who fancies a game of SH then?" I doubt many would have any interest and sadly GW will not support SH properly so it became a sort of 'specialised game' which is a real shame.

Also, having card and boardgames to play alone are also good. I have been looking at card games to play alone. I tend to play SH against the computer now more than with other people but the rules are set in stone and you can only choose the missions that they have on offer - not your own which is a bit limiting really.

I dont even really play video games at this point, still have my cabs and PCB's, but rarely actually play - been like 2-3 years at this point since I was playing daily  . So little time these days, between entertaining the missus and the dog, when I have a moment to myself I prefer to get my music making hat on.

Miniatures were always stupid expensive, another nice thing about Necormunda - much smaller gangs, so easier to get started. Thankfully, with my buddies staff discount it wasnt too bad, but all of the 40K stuff was his.

Exactly the same with me: little time to play game regularly now. I played more at University - especially the NeoGeo. It was great but I just do not have the time now.
But when I do get back into it it is fun.

Hopefully not at the same time :D

Yes, I think this is what GW pull these games as they cannot get people to buy millions of models. GW charge, way too much. The only I buy anything from them is when they do the larger boxed sets that seriously makes things more affordable. But yes, for SH you only need like 5 Terminators and maybe 15 to 20 Genestealers and you are fine. It makes my eyes water to see GW's prices half the time and they are constantly asking the players to 'top up' with rule books and such that go out of fashion with yet another update. I see the GW business model loud and clear but I will not throw silly amounts of cash at them all the same.

We tend to play SH and other boardgames for a good afternoon or evening, have a drink, have a laugh and talk about stuff. I've introduced a few mates to SH over the years - keeping that SH flame burning :) I think the kids in the GW shops would think me being very odd playing "just a boardgame" but they perhaps have rich parents :)

A mate of mine is quite into X-Wing but I've never played it. He says that it's really good fun and that the models are pre-painted (easier for me by far). However, how is it price wise?

Around $40CAN for a starter set and then $15ish for every extra ship. Game can be learned in 15 mins and then expanded on as much as you want with extra minis and equipment cards.
