luminous corridor 0 (twin stick shooter on itch.io)

Post by tate »

A digital twin stick shooter by loren schmidt with definite old-school aesthetic and gameplay, but new ideas including scoring based on reclaiming individual CRYSTALS – the dev's high score is apparently 123.

Rock Paper Shotgun has an article on it and here's an entertaining YouTube stream.

It's pay what you want at the moment, with a suggestion of $2 that is entirely reasonable. If you pick it up, you'll want to enable sound in the option menu (hit "Esc") and probably remap the controls.

Looks pretty fun. Can you remap the controls at all? My keyboard doesn't have arrow keys.

Certainly, although the process is fairly clunky. I'm doing better with a controller via JoyToKey, as I'm not really a KB gamer.

What I like about the CRYSTALS is that they turn into timebombs if shot, which can be an issue if an EATER is munching them. I end up losing lives trying to salvage groups of them before they start chain reactions. It doesn't help that the walls (cells) will kill you if you touch them. That you (but not enemies) can warp from one side of the playfield to the other adds yet another consideration to your decision making.

Strangely, despite not being a KBM game, the structure and flow of the game remind me as much of Devil Daggers as Robotron 2084 – not a bad thing.

Upon downloading this newfangled twin stick shooter, it's a mere 146mb file upon unzipping it in Windows 10 OS. What's strange about the keyboard commands are using the keys of W (Fire Up), A (Fire Left), S (Fire Down) and D (Fire Right) and using the arrow keys to move your player character. The keyboard controls should be switched around so that WASD controls your player character and the arrow keys fire instead. (This goes against the tried-&-true method of using the WASD keyboard inputs for moving your player character imo.)

It seems that it isn't possible to change the player character movement keys to your liking but the firing keys can be changed easily. Why is that?

I like the 8-bit stylized graphics overall presentation that would truly be at home on a real low-res 15kHz arcade CRT-based monitor setup any ol' day. A cool main title attract screen along with a cool high score screen would definitely spice things up indeed.

This homebrew PC twin stick shooter would be ace on the Nintendo Switch or even the PS Vita handheld platforms as they already have dedicated twin stick controls from the get-go.
