Yesterday I purchased a DVDO iScan HD+ for next to nothing.
I would like to try and connect an original Xbox to it, and output to my 4k TV. Does anyone have any recommended settings for the best output?
Conversely, I have read a bit about using them successfully as a downscaler. I have a PVM 20m2U that I would like to possibility use for downscaling consoles to 240p, if anyone could possibly shed some light on the best route for doing that.

Fudoh, I want to say thank you for all the information you have provided to the community. Everything I have learned about resolutions, scaling, and CRT gaming in general has been because of your efforts. I'm sure the same goes for many others.Fudoh wrote:All infos you need: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=53807
I did indeed skim through most of the post you shared. I am going to take another look through and see if I can wrap my head around it. The examples listed using the VP50Pro. I see you mention the HD+ in the thread being able to do this - I am assuming the settings are the same across both devices?
Also just curious, what notable difference does the VP50Pro have over the HD+? Thank you!

actually only the older units like the HD+ can provide a 15khz output. The later models like the 50Pro can't go any lower than 31khz (480p).Also just curious, what notable difference does the VP50Pro have over the HD+? Thank you!
For progressive sources (e.g. 480p from an XBox) the main difference between the two is the scaling engine and the possibility to adjust edge and detail enhancement on the 50Pro. But while the 50Pro is technically a bit sharper, the HD+ in comparison does a very good job.

hi poisongoomba, Fudoh is correct the vp50 can only do 240p at 120hz, so not usable with normal TVs and broadcast monitors (VGA displays can do it, and 384p at 60hz is doable) the HD and HD+ can output 240p at 60hz so that should work on a wider variety of CRTs. for the pvm you'll have to decided what type of output and sync will work best for your display but the HD+ should work great for down scaling.
as for your 4k TV, unless your TV has really bad up scaling (does it?) I probably wouldn't use an HD+ with it. if you are having some scaling issues sometimes using a digitizer helps (input lag free component to HDMI converters are only around $20 and I use a bunch of them with my video setups) (this is the one I use the most. https://www.amazon.com/Portta-YPbPr-Com ... I sill love using my HD and HD+, but I would think a 4k set would have better tech for the scaler and de-interlacing. (does your TV have a Game mode?)

Thank you very much guys for the input. So, I am probably better off just using it as a downscaler huh? Honestly, even upscaled the Xbox doesn't look amazing, and doubt it ever will on a 65 inch LCD. Of course, I am just using S-Video right now so that I am sure is doing it a disservice.Blair wrote:hi poisongoomba, Fudoh is correct the vp50 can only do 240p at 120hz, so not usable with normal TVs and broadcast monitors (VGA displays can do it, and 384p at 60hz is doable) the HD and HD+ can output 240p at 60hz so that should work on a wider variety of CRTs. for the pvm you'll have to decided what type of output and sync will work best for your display but the HD+ should work great for down scaling.

I don't know, my Wii outputs 240p just fine via component to my PVM, so I don't even know if I have a use for the HD+. I will mess around for it for a while, but might consider possibly selling it. Thanks again guys for your help.

Re: Help with recently acquired DVDO iScan HD+
the video deinterlacing on the iScan HD+ is extremely dated. It wasn't even great when the machine was new. To get an idea of its performance on your LCD you need at least a 480p component source. Your XBox provides that using the right cables.I am just using S-Video right now so that I am sure is doing it a disservice.
