Sony PVM Noise and Screen distortion?

Post by zildjaindevil »

hope I didn't make a mistake with purchasing this PVM-14M4u. I just received all my Scart cables for my rgb consoles. I first setup my snes mini, as as the monitor turns on it's has a lingering pinging sound. I figure it's just the monitor, I couldn't remember that last time I've had a crt. display and audio are working great, I haven't messed with any of the monitor settings, and the centering of the screen is offset a bit. I wasn't to worried about it, because I will fine tune everything when I have time. But only after 8 mins of the monitor being on... the pinging noise gets louder and the screen distorts completely. I turned the monitor off, turned it back on and everything is okay, then after 8mins it happens again. I'm furious, and praying there is a solution to this. anyone have any thoughts? I'll post pictures soon.

Thank you guys in advance!

Sounds like the monitor is in need of servicing. :/

I don't think there's anything anyone will be able to help you with, although I wish there were. it might not be anything serious, maybe just a cap or transistor in need of a replacement.

I had a loud BVM once (had a much louder buzzing than normal) and I found that by replacing the power supply I was able to correct it. I happened to have a spare from another unit but normally getting that part on it's own would have been a bit difficult.

thank you for your response! I'm really annoyed that this happened since he ebay seller said it was fine, just used condition. As for servicing and repairs, what are my options? Can I take this to any tv repair company?? I don't want to service it myself since I have no clue what I am doing. also, it's funny that you say that about the power supply. I was just looking at it, and wondering if the power supply that is used with the monitor is the original one or not. What does the writing on the power supply have written on it for me to know if it's the one it came with? Thanks again for the response!

Did you open it up? I mean the power supply as in the entire internal section not just the power plug itself. This is what the BVM one looks like: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/OTYwWDEyODA=/ ... 880000500F

I'm not sure what the insides of the PVM-14M4u are like but you might be able to google the service manual for it.

As for repairing it, I think you can bring it to any older technician who has experience dealing with pro crt monitors. Might be hard to find now a days. I know that in my area (the Washington/Virginia/Maryland district) there are only a handful of people who have the expertise to deal with crt's anymore, so it might take some time searching online.
