Vulgus — What lies beyond each LETTER [E, S, D]?

Hello guys,

I have searched here on the forum and also on Internet, but found nothing:

What is the meaning of each letter [E, S and D] we can collect on Vulgus?
Just bonus points? Some kind of help? Penalization?

A friend of mine suggested that every time you grab a letter, game difficult increases in some way: like number of enemies, speed of enemies, number of bullets shot by enemies.
I really see no difference between collect or not collect them.

Also, there are any differences in the difficulty between US/World and JPN version?
I read somewhere that Vulgus earns 50.000 points in the Japanese version.
I do play in the USA/World and killed Vulgus for the first time few days ago.
Got 10.000 from him.

Iirc from the ps2 port if you don't pick the letters up it won't cycle to the next and thus eventually to the bomb (it may alternate between bomb and letter been a long time since I've played it), so you won't get a decent enough stock to get max points during the space waves - killing all 6/8? mini enemies with a single bomb i don't think you need to chain the big one but it's inevitable the way the waves settle. The icons/bombs only reappear/refresh when collected or once they're off the screen so it's a trade off between adding to bomb stock quickly and increasing difficulty, also if the bomb stock is full then all that will spawn is letter icons
