looking for a device to adjust image width/height (size)

Post by kendjet »

A device like the Extron RGB 201 Rxi lets me shift the image horizontally and vertically. I find this extremely helpful.

Does a device exist that allows you to do something similar with the width/height of the image (H amp/ V amp)? I can do this with my Extron VSC 700, but it changes the 31kHz into a 15kHz signal...

Thanks a lot!

Be warned that any such device will likely buffer at least an entire frame, adding at least that much lag.

Man...I was just going to buy one of these for that specific reason so this is good to know. So the sizing (width/height) feature ONLY works on 480i and 240p signals? Nothing over that? I wanted it to scale my 480p image off my original Xbox as well...

adjusting the position is done by altering the front and back porch of the image.

To adjust size without altering the area your display covers involves rescaling of the image. The VSC units are scan converters, so they do this while downscaling your resolution.

Video processors like the DVDOs provide full geometry controls for any output of 31khz and higher (at 6-7 ms of added lag for 31khz inputs).

I don't think that there's any processor out there what would provide this feature for a 15khz input and output. The resolution just doesn't allow for proper rescaling without doing major damage to the picture.

Kendjet, I have multiple obscure and undocumented processors. There are options. What kind of output do you need? Be specific.

Also, how much hassle are you willing to endure? The most flexible options are also the least user friendly.

There are probably going to be caveats. I'll try to explain.

@Dochartaigh: if you feed the Extron VSC a 31kHz signal (480p), it will convert it to 15kHz (480i), as far as I understand. I take it you already read Fudoh's excellent article? (http://scanlines.hazard-city.de/)

@Fudoh: I was afraid you were going to say that

@orange808: Like Fudoh suggested, I'm looking for a device that accepts and outputs 15kHz (e.g. connecting a Super Nintendo/Famicom to a European SD CRT TV / 15kHz RGB monitor).

Thanks a lot for the replies!

Well technically your TV has geometry settings in the hidden service menu and/or potentiometers inside that let you do exactly that.

But unlike with arcade monitors in Japanese candy cabs, it is hardly practical since you need access that menu with a code, or the poorly placed potentiometers, every time you want to adjust something.

What's your TV model by the way ? If you're lucky there's a not-too-hard to access service menu with all the settings you need. Ideally all done on the remote (if you're really lucky)

The thing is that for 240p, I have 2 TV's and 2 monitors which I'm planning on putting in a cabinet, so opening the TV/monitor every time when I want to switch inputs is not an option...

Apart from the JVC TM-H1950CG, I'm pretty sure I have to open the rest of them up and mess with the pots. Too bad I don't have the skills to install external pots like Calamity did here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxdUCLa4VCk

Anyways, I currently have these:

TVs:
Sony KV-X2131D (AE-1 chassis; analog pots)
Sony KV-D2511D (AE-1 chassis; analog pots)

Monitors:
JVC TM-2100E
JVC TM-H1950CG -> I can shift the image left/right on this one using the buttons on the front

Thanks!

Just build a remote board for your AE-1 chassis so that you can control the geometry like you do in an arcade cabinet
Not that hard.

^ yup, when available this is the best thing to do. requires (moderate) soldering skills indeed.
