Help me buy a 8' Sony PVM
Hey, I'm looking to buy a Sony PVM, and these are the ones available on my city:
http://lista.mercadolivre.com.br/rio-de ... erId_PRICE
http://lista.mercadolivre.com.br/rio-de ... erId_PRICE
(This site is the equivalent of Ebay from Brazil)
Someone can help choose between these models? I really don't quite know which one is better.
I would use it with MAME.
(I'm low on budget).
Thank you!

Try to get the ones with model numbers ending in 44 and 45. They have 450 TVL instead of 250. Boa sorte!

Unless space is the issue I wouldn't bother. Just get a (larger+cheaper) consumer crt tv. These small boxes only existed for mobility/size, playing on them would be fairly miserable imho...

Quoted for emphasis. 14" is the BARE MINIMUM in size you want to play video game sizes on. Maybe Pong would be fine on an 8", but that's about ti. Even with a 14" PVM I want to sit with my head like 3 feet away. A 20" is perfect (albeit I still like to sit super close as most of us are used to like 50" and above widescreen LED/LCD TV's anymore).gray117 wrote:Unless space is the issue I wouldn't bother. Also, it takes a keen eye, and experience, to notice any difference (especially at first glance) between a quality Sony Wega TV (mostly free on Craigslist) hooked up through S-Video from your SNES for example, and a comparable size PVM hooked up through RGBs with BNC connectors. When I first started I literally had to take photos of each screen and bring them up on my computer side-by-side to be able to pick out the minute differences. Those differences are definitely there, and become more evident the more you study the two images (and CAN start to add up as you start to notice little things more and more), but to be honest they're still small differences as a while...especially when you're still learning.

Not unless you plan on using it as a workbench monitor or something, 13-14" is the minimum I'd go with.

Yeah, totally not worth it for playing.
As some kind of tchotchke maybe (always wanted to use that word).

Too bad.
14' PVMs are like R$1300 here.
That's more than most people earn in a whole month...!
(Yeah, is that expensive.)
Thank you all anyway!

The hell those sellers and their ovepriced pro monitors.
Just get a nice consumer TV set, or an LCD+OSSC, and profit.

Agreed. Unless by 8' pvm you mean an 8 foot pvm, in which case let me know if you find one.

I have an 8" pvm and I agree. I bought it specifically as something to tote with a Wii (slow work days).

There seems to be more options in Sao Paulo. Is that a distance you would travel?

Also, I note that there is currently a hell of a lot of vga crt monitors available there. I regret not picking up more of those when I had the opportunity, and now they are really quite scarce here (I'm in Australia). Don't make the same mistake if you are, or might, be interested in having a few of those around.

Actually I saw that ad.
But it says: "!PRECISA DE REPAROS, TEM UM QUE NÃO LIGA E OUTRO COM PROBLEMA DE CROMA"
It means: "Need repair, one doesn't turn on and the other have problems with the chroma."
There's this other site that is like craigslist but form Brazil, there's a lot of VGA monitors for a very low price, most R$10 (around 3 US Dollars)

8" is small but it's still fun to have on your desk. Some of the ones you listed are around $30 US, not bad price.
If you can spend more:
15" NEC with SCART

20" Ikegami

Thank you, but unfortunately, these cost a lot.dak1 wrote:8" is small but it's still fun to have on your desk. Some of the ones you listed are around $30 US, not bad price.

Just imagine, that the salary of a whole month of many people is half the price of that 15'' NEC.
That's why people use to riot on the streets around here
Anyway, maybe a regular CRT would do the trick.

Do the TVs have scart down there? Or component?

Absolutely no SCART TVs around here.Einzelherz wrote:Do the TVs have scart down there? Or component?
And component or S-Video aren't found on small CRTs...

Anybody has info about it?

Re: Help me buy a 8' Sony PVM
No idea... possibly something re-branded/licensed/made nationally to get around taxes?
But it's svideo + sd only (hassle)? No rgb... So basically the same as any regular tv?... so why not just any (larger) tv that has svideo?
Svideo may be a legitmate route unless you get lucky on finding component/rgb set. Unless your dead fixed on rgb there's really no reason to pay a hiked premium for pro monitors imho.
Pro monitors got real popular because you used to be able to pick them up for pretty much the same price as a regular crt, aside from quality components the appeal is obviously enhanced in areas where consumer rgb is otherwise unavailable, but it is now a bit of an obsession where people feel obliged to hunt out a pro monitor, sellers have gotten wise to their appeal, and it's gotten a bit excessive imho vs consumer sets. Unless you are really keen/lucky the cost/quality is typically not worth it (which even that can be a bit hit and miss gamble given the age of these things now). Unless you're really an enthusiast it's hard to recommend 'investing' in pro crts vs consumer svideo (let alone euro zone where you obviously have scart rgb), the happy medium for non-scart territories will be component - but those are relatively rare, and getting rarer (thus more akin to hassle/luck).
There's nothing wrong in pumping money into pro sets if it really is your thing, it's just hard to recommend everyone to do, especially if you're stretching a budget, and aren't fully in the know about what you're doing and why. It's just like recommending playing on (increasingly) expensive original hardware - at some point it's easier to recommend a port or pursuing alternative means.
All this stuff is starting to edge into the realm of antiques, having previously just been old surplus junk.

Good to see some folks from Brazil here too. Getting into RGB and PVM/BVM/Ikegami stuff is not easy around here

Re: Help me buy a 8' Sony PVM
About the "Gension Gsm-h15d " you posted:
Just by looking at the pictures, I can tell it is a SONY PVM (later low end model). No mistake about that.
Search for SONY PVM 14L1, it is not this exact model buy VERY SIMILAR (only component and SVIDEO) and no RGB/composite.
Some specs:
http://www.broadcaststore.com/store/mod ... ?id=787226
This rebranded monitor looks like new, which is a plus, and I believe the price is good (would be 2 or 3x as much for a PVM). Nice find.
As I said, no RGB but for the price I guess you couldn't get much better then that. Even a "low end" PVM like that wouldn't be cheap around here.
The bright side: BIVOLT, PAL/NTSC, almost NEW (looks like), and this probably has the same line count of early PVM HR monitors (600 TVL).
Some of the smaller/cheaper ones (especially "QM" sets) only have 300 lines.
I don't have anything as cheap as that for sale, but in case you want some with RGB let me know.

Re: Help me buy a 8' Sony PVM
I hope the original poster keeps up with his thread. I got many SONY and IKEGAMI 14" for sale, sent a PM but got no reply... hope he didn't get an 8" one (which are overpriced here in Brazil).
