Component transcoder vs RGB modding a consumer TV
Anyone know if there's a difference w/ consumer tvs... between using a transcoder for component to scart, vs modding the internals of the tv for RGB w/ scart output? I'd assume there is a difference, but not sure if it's great enough to consider doing.

There's theoretically loss in the conversion, but I continue to doubt any human could tell the difference. Just don't get a cheapo transcoder.

Also another thing is the tuning of the set's YpBpR inputs themselves.
RGB doesn't need tuning since it's perfect analog colorspace, but YpBpR needs to be tuned and varying sets will have various degrees of succes in that area (some later sets even let you adjust the tuning in the service menu).
Not anything major, but worth noting nonetheless. Should not degrade the picture much (just barely is my guess). For example, on a PVM there really isn't much difference between RGB and YUV from a ps2.
Would personnally love to see pics of RGB transcoded to component and into the set, and RGB straight to the (modded) same set. with a reference transcoder. Just to see how much of a difference there truly is in an ideal setup.

I've tested this on a PVM, since they take both component and RGB. I hooked up a Saturn straight with RGB, and then ran it through a component transcoder. No differences popped out at me, they both looked wonderful.

Originally bought it to play Dreamcast games in 480p on my hi-scan set, but it also works great for 15kHz stuff as long as composite sync goes to both the H and V pins.
I still haven't tried to send composite video instead of composite sync, maybe next week.

Oh, didn't know it was possible to use the 9a60 for 15kHz!
I couldn't get it to work, so I sold mine -_-
So you need a VGA cable that is modified at one end (combined syncs) or something?

Yeah, I made my own RGB cables so my setup is a little weird. But all you really need to do is connect the H and V pins somehow, either at the base of the pins with a small piece of wire or solder, open up the connector and do it, or just open the cable and splice them.FinalBaton wrote:Oh, didn't know it was possible to use the 9a60 for 15kHz!

I've been using a transcoder made by fusion916 that works great. My PVM doesn't accept component video, only RGB, but comparisons I've done with my consumer set versus the PVM look really great. I'm equally happy playing on a JVC consumer set with a high line count with a transcoder....even moreso since the probability of being able to replace the JVC in the future is much higher. If I had the storage space I'd be stockpiling a handful of CRTs right now.
In the future I plan on getting myself a larger professional CRT, and when that happens would definitely do some tests. Maybe if I ever get ahold of an XM29 or something (a guy can dream).......

With pro monitors whose rgb/comp signals share one set of color adjustments (sony and jvc at least), switching between the two gives you different results. On my two Sonys the variation is slightly different.
I assume the same would be true from a TV. Regardless, if you pick one signal type (i.e. only component) and calibrate it, you're going to get the same results.

That Jvc looks like a good tv, to add Rgb to Finalbaton. Its 700 TVL.

Yes indeed! it should be sharp as all get out, for a consumer CRT. I can't wait to see how the colors will look on it (I have a pretty good feeling, JVC sets from that era look really nice).
