Best version Sega Saturn

Post by mimylovesjapan »

What is the best version of japanese Saturn in term of durability ? I mean better lens and compnents. I have to buy a saturn but I hesitate to buy a model 1, model 2 or a V-Saturn....

I don't think any version is more reliable than the other. Just go for whichever one you like the look of the most, or whichever one has the best price.

yes, I found this forum also. Then I took a model 1.
But I afraid especially about duability.
I found one for 2000 yens including sending fees. I wish it will be OK. (1 week warranty)

Saturn is a better machine than Playstation for reliability. An earlier machine is more desirable if you want to play Outrun.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Yeah, make sure it's a model with the oval buttons, not the round ones, as the later models don't run the sega ages games as neorichieb1971 says.

not really sure with that. I own a PSX that I bought new in 1996. 21 years ago, and I can play with today (sure I have to put it at 90° to fix the lens issue but it works !).
For saturn, I bought 2 saturn in 10 years, and both died. I played thousand hours with my PSX, and only hundred hours with my saturn.

Durability can't reliably be determined for anything without a big enough sampling size.

I wouldn't be too worried about it if you can get systems that cheap.

It is undecided who is more reliable, but PS1 had a lot of bad design flaws and known bad models. The saving grace is that there are a gorillion PS1s so finding a replacement isn't expensive nor hard. Not like this means anything, but just from googling, Next Gen magazine stated within 1 year the Sega Saturn had a 18% failure rate. That is pretty bad.

The problem with sega saturn at times is the spindle can get pushed down too far and sanyo drives being a pain in the ass at times for mods from my reading. The good thing about sanyo drives is I think they are uncommon/rare, most saturns have JVC lasers from what I see except the odd Sanyo or Hitachi one.

Get a model 1, better picture quality than the revisions, nice RGB output. Sega Saturn were manufactured in different countries by many different companies, so reliability might change depending on manufacturer.
