Gunstar Super Heroes or We Love Katamari?

Post by Zweihander »

Help me out, Shmups.com... I can't decide. T_T I've done my research, watched all the videos of each on Gamespot... All videos from Gunstar elicited drool from my mouth, while all videos of Katamari made me squeak with "OMG THAT LOOKS FUN". I loved the original Katamari, and I liked Gunstar Heroes (despite its bland level design, which is COMPLETELY absent in Super Heroes' M4DD stage designs)... I am torn between the two, and I get one of them tomorrow. HELLLLLLLP... T_T

I don't do 3D fighters though... other than Bushido Blade. ^^

rather arbitrary restriction. You're missing out on hundreds of hours of deep goodness that way.

^^; I'll take your word for it... 3D fighters lost my interest with games like Tekken 4 and Soul Callibur. They're just not my thing, I guess; they just feel far more restricting than 2D fighters, in terms of speed, and the attacks that can be strung together; take Guilty Gear, for example; I guess I've been spoiled, because unless a fighter will let me do lightning-fast strikes (as opposed to the overly-choreographed punches and kicks in modern 3D fighters) and let me cancel Specials on-the-fly (ala Guilty Gear), count me out. ^^; As fun as they are for a lot of people, I washed ashore at Shmups.com pretty much fed up with 3D gaming. ^^;

Just to point out the obvious, these both come from the same company. It's a pretty narrow sample.

Anyway, get both, but Gunstar first since it'll probably be harder to find later on.

Ah, but I'm also disgusted thoroughly at what the classic 2D Mortal Kombat has devolved into. yuck. such utter crap now. o_O Virtua Fighter never really was my thing. Why the fuck did Street Fighter decide to go shoot itself in the foot and become 3D? T_T And of all of Squaresoft's attempts at fighting games, Bushido Blade was the only one that I actually liked. Sure, the moves are slow and choreographed, but the game makes sense to me in ways no other 3-D fighter does.

I intend to get both in the next month or so... perhaps you're right about getting Gunstar first, besides i'm pretty sure i can beat that in a week. Katamari? That's shit's gonna consume my soul all over again. ^^;

Well Katamari is 3D so we should avoid that at all costs. When did Street Fighter become 3D? EX wasn't made by CAPCOM either.

Wow.. Didn't know Capcom would sell out like that. :(

And by "fed up with 3D gaming", I mean the "amazing graphics but shitty gameplay" titles. Devil May Cry 2 and Final Fantasy X, for example. I love Devil May Cry 1 & 3, Katamari Damacy, Castlevania: Lament... basically, 3D games done right. I really should have specified this...

Get Minna Daisuke Katamari. Instead of "I feel the cosmos" as cutscenes, you get background story on why the King of All Cosmos is as messed up as he is. The level designs and goals are more varied, as well. For instance, in one level you are given the job of making a sumo larger. So you roll around this sumo wrestler, and as you roll up food he gets fatter. Great stuff. And the soundtrack is pretty good too - not as amazing as the first one, but still top notch.

Maybe it's just me, but every once in a while I need a break from insane shooters.

See the guy in my avatar? He is flipping you off because you associate Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution with Tekken and Soul Calibur! edit AND SF EX! For chrissakes learn some RESPECT! :)

edit: and to stay on topic, think of it like this. Katamari will be a wonderful whismical gameplay experience, but you will probably not get nearly as much replay value as Gunstar. So arcade style action with inf replay value vs a full bodied gameplay experience. The choice is yours!

Sorry i don't think I really helped...

I'm going to suggest Wario Ware Twisted since that game is insanely fun with it's wierdness and twisting gameplay. The Katamari games sound pretty darn sweet, but I haven't played them.

Get Gunstar.

Katamari games get old fast.

I would get Gunstar.

Although I have to say, it doesn't have nearly the replay valua of the original. It has lots of levels, but they're all rather short, so they feel a little bit like samples taken out of the original. Still, the game is totally sweet, and it will probably become somewhat tricky to find on the aftermarket, whereas Katamari you'll likely be able to pick up a lot cheaper later.

Besides, Gunstar Heroes has Seven Force in it! :D

Katamari is fun while it lasts. However, once you've rolled up the world, there's basically no incentive to play it ever again (for me, at least).

Is there a point to the new gunstar heroes if you own the OLD gunstar heroes?

Actually the same may be asked about the new katamari.

If you have the first Katamari, the sequel is pretty much pointless. As far as sequels go, I would call it 'bad', because it adds nothing significant, and abandons many good things present in the first game (strategy, good music, replayability). You can literally play Katamari 2 with your eyes closed and still clear levels on your first attempt. The first game had things laid out in specific ways which required strategy to pick up in the fastest/largest way possible, but the sequel simply buries you in zillions of objects. Imagine if they had made Duck Hunt 2, where you had infinite ammo and the screen was constantly filled with dozens of ducks that never flew away. That's what We Love Katamari is like. It's 100% fan service...not really a game at all...just an interactive way to reminisce about what a good game the first Katamari was. Even the music is a watered down, crappy tribute to the first game's soundtrack. Don't waste your money on it, Gunstar or not.

Buy Gunstar SH now, get We heart Katamari later. Why? They're both great games but A) Gunstar is a great sequel to one of the best designed platform gunners of all time. You will have to decide by weighing which do you like more? 2D games or 3D arcade/niche games? 'Nuff said

B)Knowing the collector hype surrounding Treasure games, Gunstar SH will only go up in price as the years go on while Katamari is $20 and will probably stay there or not go much higher above that...unless the print run is a lot smaller than I think and Katamari becomes Namco's next Klonoa as far as collector titles go. :?

(first one being Ikaruga)
