StarLord :)

Post by hexahedron »

Hey all,

I'm new to this forum, and in shmup dev as well.

I just released my first shmup, StarLord on google playstore.

It is developed in Unity. There are only one big feature I could not include, the enemy & bullet moving patters - I'm working on these, to set them in the next update.

Please check the game if you want, every review is most welcome!

Hi Hexahedron, welcome.

I played your game for a little while and had some major issues that prevented me from getting far.

Almost all touch screen shmups provide two alternative control methods--one that forces your avatar to maintain its position relative to where you first put your finger down (which is what Starlord does, sort of) and another which causes the avatar to maintain a position just under your finger (often slightly offset so you can see it clearly). I think your game would greatly benefit from this second control option.

Also, I am having some weird issues with the touch input generally. My ship has a tendency to "lock" to the bottom of the screen, and I have to release and re-touch to regain y-axis control. Additionally, there are some other input glitches--I often see the ship make small movements even when my finger is perfectly still. Furthermore, the avatar motion does not seem to have a 1:1 relationship with the motion of my finger on screen. Small finger motions result in exaggerated ship motion, and sometimes my finger movement doesn't register at all.

Because of these issues, I have been unable to complete the first mission/level.

On the upside, your explosion particle effects look very nice, and I really like the UI design for the front menu. Keep up your work, I look forward to trying the next update. On the off-chance that some of these issues are device-specific, I am playing on an HTC One.

Thanks for the comment! :)

1. the control: I've tried to reproduce the control of Sky Force shmup, as far as I saw, it is the highest quality app in playstore in shmup niché. It is true, StarLord's controll needs some more optimization.

2. I also observerd the problem that the ship used to stuck in the screen bottom. I'm on it, to correct this in next version.

I keep up working on the game, try to correct control issues + working on enemy&bullet patterns.

Thanks again,
Paul
