Mobile shmup category
I know it's a bit controversial, given that a lot of purist gamers do not consider the mobile market as "true", but goddamn, there were some amazing titles there. I used to play Alpha Wing 2 and Arcadius all the time on my old Nokia phones and remember them both as being very good and challenging games. Then there's games like Xelorians on Android which I really would put in my top 10. I think the mobile platform hosts some great stuff and it's a shame not to talk about them. In my opinion, they really do deserve some attention.

I really like Gradius NEO, it shares some stuff that's really cool for me, like the stage 5's maze section and neat music.
Re: Mobile shmup category
Dariusburst Second Prologue is quite fun, if not a little easier compared to the main versions because of the more lenient Burst Gauge
Danmaku Death can be good for practicing the TLB patterns of many STGs, albeit with touchscreen controls
I don't know many other good shmups on Android, other than the aforementioned ones I only played Sector Sweep which was a massive grindfest

Oh man, you REALLY need to try Xelorians. It's a TON of fun and can get pretty challenging.Durandal wrote:Dariusburst Second Prologue is quite fun, if not a little easier compared to the main versions because of the more lenient Burst Gauge

Funny you even bring this topic up, the mobile market has been surprisingly crazy, my girl told me that she recently downloaded Gunbird 2 and Strikers 1945 3 on her android cell phone and IT'S FREE!? What's been going on!?

Re: Mobile shmup category
I found Strikers 1945 2 there. That being one of my childhood favorites, I was so happy to be able to play a remastered version, but the whole experience was ruined by a crapton of in-app purchases :/ Paywalls really are a thing you have to keep an eye out in that market, it sucksKaiserFoxHD wrote:Funny you even bring this topic up, the mobile market has been surprisingly crazy, my girl told me that she recently downloaded Gunbird 2 and Strikers 1945 3 on her android cell phone and IT'S FREE!? Re: Mobile shmup category
I think my only gripe with Danmaku Unlimited is that the enemy bullets kinda undermine the rest of the graphics. They stand out a lot and you end up just seeing them most of the time rather than the enemies

For those who want a bit retro-looking danmaku there's Shot04/Nokogi Rider

The only Italian reviewer gave it three stars with "Please." as the title and "You always [re]start at the beginning" as the review.Gespenst wrote:For those who want a bit retro-looking danmaku there's Shot04/Nokogi Rider

I second that!!! The demonstration trailer was pretty sick! And I'm digging the design of the game too.Darkscizzar wrote:Dat trailer tho :'DAxelMill wrote:The only Italian reviewer gave it three stars with "Please." as the title and "You always [re]start at the beginning" as the review.Gespenst wrote:For those who want a bit retro-looking danmaku there's Shot04/Nokogi Rider

Try Tyrian and Dodonpachi (any of 'em). And avoid R-Type, as tempting as it might be to download it - it's a very shoddy port imoqmish wrote:Any recommendations from this huge list of mini-reviews?

I've played R-Type, Strikers 1945 II & III. They are all pretty bad if you actually care about the genre. As a distraction when you are bored or sitting on the toilet they are passable for a few minutes of cheap entertainment, but you cannot possibly take this stuff seriously. The scoring on the in Strikers is beyond retarded though, you get no penalty for feeding continues at all.

The Strikers ports are just there to suck out as much money as possiblepegboy wrote:I've played R-Type, Strikers 1945 II & III. They are all pretty bad if you actually care about the genre. Re: Mobile shmup category
So, interesting thing just happened... I came across 2 shmups, one named Galaxy Strike and the other Star Fighter 3001. They are both the same game. The developer of Galaxy Strike, by the name of Yamago Team has ripped off Star Fighter 3001 in its entirety, just changed the name and put a bunch of engrish photoshop over screenshots. They've ripped 3 games like that in total. Yamago Team needs to be taken off the app store

So, is there any way to still play the Cave ports on android? Dodonpachi Resurrection, Espgaluda 2, DS?

Re: Mobile shmup category
I think your only hope on that front is to flash a custom ROM that predates Lollipop and sideload them with an APK file. Dunno if they need active servers to work, but if that's not the case, they should work fine.
Re: Mobile shmup category
Well, i am on 4.3 rooted rom. Thing is, the apk (Espgaluda2) does not download the data. Although i am wifi connected to the internet, after a minute of "searching" it says no network connection...
Maybe if i'd manually transfer the cache data to SD card...but it's nowhere to be found. Seems like no one was inspired enough to backup it sadly

Re: Mobile shmup category
Oh, Esp2 on Android was one of those G-Gee releases, wasn't it? I wouldn't be surprised at all if it won't work without those servers online. I would have more faith in the iOS version still working because that one seemed fairly well-made, but the Android Cave games all sorta seemed like varying levels of shoddy.
